💥 Ballard Blast from the Past: Hood Canal Bridge 💥 Remember back in 2009 when Ballard Marine Constriction stepped up for the Hood Canal Bridge Anchor Cable Inspection and Repairs? The Washington Department of Transportation called on us with just 24 hours’ notice, and we delivered! The Hood Canal Bridge is a floating marvel connecting Jefferson and Kitsap counties over Puget Sound that needed urgent attention. Ballard’s team brought in inspection and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to tackle the emergency wire repair. These ROVs got to work cleaning heavy marine life buildup from the bridge anchor block, salvaging components such as 85lb. “jewel,” and installing a new messenger line from the anchor clock to the surface. Once that was done, we performed a post-installation survey of the anchor block and 2,500 feet of anchor wire. We also utilized a range of other equipment and techniques, including shallow water diving, inspection/light work ROV, work class ROV, sonar services, specialized vessels, and vehicle-assisted tooling. It was a challenge, but Ballard got the job done right! #BallardMarineConstruction #ConstructionMemories #Throwback #HoodCanalBridge #PugetSound #ROV #EmergencyResponse #AnchorRepair #BridgeMaintenance #UnderwaterInspection #Engineering #Infrastructure #WSDOT

From Intern to Full-Time Engineer: Matthew Robertson's Journey at Ballard 👷♂️ Matthew Robertson’s path from intern to full-time engineer at Ballard is a testament to the company’s commitment to fostering talent and maintaining a supportive culture. Drawn to Ballard by the people, culture, and unique projects, Matthew found an environment where he could grow professionally. "The personable, highly motivated, and driven employees, along with Ballard's emphasis on maintaining a family culture, made it an easy choice." The company's focus on pursuing unique marine construction projects that require creative thinking and collaboration further solidified his decision. During his internship from May 2022 to December 2023, Matthew was immersed in various roles and responsibilities that significantly shaped his career. From his initial experience in the Bradenton, FL office, where he managed QA/QC for over 30,000 linear feet of levee, to his part-time business development role while at Boise State University, Matthew gained invaluable insights and skills. His second internship in Baltimore, MD, provided in-depth knowledge of estimating, allowing him to understand the intricacies of creating estimates, building crews, and writing proposals. "My experience as an intern was diverse and taught me things you just can't learn in the classroom," Matthew reflects. As an engineer for Ballard’s Robotics & Survey Division, Matthew enjoys the wide range of responsibilities his role entails. He appreciates the opportunity to see a project through all its phases, from business development to execution. For current interns or those considering an internship at Ballard, Matthew advises, "Ask questions and be a good listener. The most successful interns dig deep to listen carefully and ask the right questions needed to solve problems in the office and in the field.” Matthew is currently living in the United Kingdom until September while attending Fugro’s Applied Hydrographic Survey Program. There he is learning the ins and outs of hydrographic survey. The program is an IHO accredited Category B surveyor course and upon successful completion, he will be moving to Ballard's Greenville, South Carolina office. Matthew's journey highlights the dynamic and growth-oriented environment at Ballard, where interns are given the resources and opportunities to develop into full-time professionals, ready to tackle the challenges of the marine construction industry. Did you know that Ballard performs underwater robotic inspections all over the world? A recent internal pipeline inspection in Hong Kong allowed the local contractor to save time and money by identifying the exact location of a pipeline failure and making a repair without extensive excavation of the line. Our robotic inspection and service SME’s will be available at the American Nuclear Services Utility Working Conference from June 25th – June 28th, in Naples, FL to discuss your infrastructure inspection needs. Stop by booth #206 to find Derik Little, Brian Poshak, and Liam O'Brien. We look forward to seeing you there! #UtilityServices #ExecutiveSummit #ProjectNeeds #BallardMarineConstruction #IndustryEvent #Networking #Innovation #Engineering #NaplesFL #BusinessGrowth #ConstructionIndustry #LeadershipSummit
