Congratulations are in order for Philadelphia Youth Basketball on the recent opening of its beautiful new facility in the #Nicetown section of North #Philadelphia. The Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center—named for the #76ers super-fan who contributed millions to the project—is a place where young people “can go for the basketball, but stay for the workforce development, health and wellness programs, entrepreneurial training, and more,” as PYB and its dynamic Co-founder & CEO Kenny Holdsman like to say. Our support for PYB and the project dates back to its conception more than a decade ago. Bart Mellits (below right, with fellow project booster Bruce Goodman of Goodman Properties), led a team of more than a dozen lawyers from across practice areas who contributed pro bono legal services to help make the project a reality. And John Langel, our now-retired partner and former Litigation Department Chair, has served as Chair of PYB’s Board of Directors from the organization's beginning. Our #probono program is nationally recognized for its support of causes, organizations, and individuals dedicated to improving the places where we live and work. Our lawyers and professional staff hold leadership roles with a wide range of organizations to support our communities across the country. Rebecca Leaf, a labor lawyer in Ballard Spahr’s Baltimore office, spoke to Davis Giangiulio of NBC News for a piece on the zeal with which the National Labor Relations Board and its General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo have pursued a pro-labor course of action. “The Trump administration had reversed too many Obama-era policies, and [Abruzzo] wanted to go back to them, but then I think she wanted to go even further,” Rebecca said. What the future holds for the NLRB and labor activity depends on the upcoming presidential election. Read more of the article here: https://bit.ly/3MfKYUm #BallardLitigation #LaborAndEmployment #NLRB
