Neighborhood Roots. Transformed Lives.
About us
Banyan Community is a Community Development Organization rooted in the Phillips neighborhood to transform lives by developing youth, strengthening families, and creating community. Banyan inspires young people to invest themselves in their education and their community. Youth are prepared to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through programs that cultivate social, emotional and educational growth. Our youth have fun while they develop into committed learners. Programming starts in elementary school and works with youth through college. Banyan youth have a 100% high school graduation rate! Banyan brings hope to families by strengthening the relationships between parents and children. Our families have close bonds that enable us to work together toward a brighter future. Banyan helps parents become advocates for their children in all arenas of life, while children become an inspiration to their parents. Banyan connects members of the neighborhood with each other, creating bonds that encourage communication and belonging. Building trust between residents and training leaders on every block brings hope and safety to every home. Banyan acts as a “resource hub”, connecting residents with supportive systems and equipping them as leading citizens.

Youth who are in need of English language services have a higher rate of being chronically absent from the South High School. Banyan’s ELEVATE program is a needed support system and encouragement for youth and families. Three afternoons a week, Banyan provides an onsite study space where staff offer support via homework help, career exploration opportunities, social emotional development lessons, and post-secondary planning assistance. https://lnkd.in/g4Pp6NQc

Sowing the Future meeting tonight! Sowing the Future (Sembrando Futuro) is our Banyan parent advisory group. Banyan parents believe that by investing now in themselves, their children, and the community, they will grow a bright future. These parents are co-creators of our work and are engaged in a variety of ways to identify needs, priorities, and improvements within the organization and in the community. Participating in collaborative discussions and actively engaging with Banyan helps build confidence in our adults, strengthens their leadership skills, and provides space for them to exercise their own voice while shaping future Banyan programs.

“I love seeing the building full of activity and watching the connections kids make as they grow and change. It’s inspiring to see them move up grades, take on new challenges, and feel welcome, especially as new youth come in.” -Kayne, Secondary Program Manager Read More and Donate Today ➡️

Banyan is tabling at Macalester College looking for high school tutor volunteers. Do you know someone who would be interested in becoming a tutor in the ASPIRE program? #giveback #education

Feeling nervous but overwhelmingly excited! The North Star Promise has opened the door for 4 Banyan youth to return to college. Many Banyan Scholars are returning with a better grasp of their primary interests, and they are all grateful for the more economical choice. Banyan Scholars who are returning to school are nervous, just like everyone else, but are overwhelmingly excited! The reduction in stress from not having to worry about tuition costs helps in managing the daily pressures of schoolwork and employment.

Thank you to St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church And School for again partnering to fund and pack backpacks for Banyan youth. Together we were able to fully fund 160 backpacks and raise $30,000. This year we also received a donation from Cargill employees.
