BAR Architects and Interiors is saddened to learn of the passing of one of our founders, Howard Backen. Our condolences to Howard’s family, friends and his team at Backen and Backen. He was an amazing mentor to several of the current BAR partners, and his dry sense of humor and talent as an architect will be missed.

About us
Memorable. Sustainable. Collaborative. BAR Architects creates meaningful and engaging environments that enrich lives and enhance the world around us. A 70+ person architectural, interior design and planning firm, we approach each project as an opportunity to develop a compelling solution that exceeds our clients’ expectations. With offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles, we bring proven expertise creating diverse commissions located throughout the U.S. and internationally. Signatories to the 2030 Commitment to create net zero buildings, sustainable design practices are an integral part of BAR’s design process. A certified Green Business, we have designed buildings to all levels of LEED certification including LEED Platinum, as well as GreenPoint rated and Build It Green certified buildings. BAR’s internal DEI Group’s mission is to dismantle prejudice and racism and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within our firm, our profession and communities we serve through education, advocacy, professional development, and outreach. Our passion for design also extends beyond our specific projects to the broader profession and community. BAR assists in neighborhood revitalization, is active in USGBC and AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE). We work with university faculty to teach classes and provide classroom critiques. Fully committed to giving back, we provide pro bono services and/or volunteer for numerous non-profits, including Habitat for Humanity, BuildOn, Haiti Partners and Blue Bear School of Music. Our belief in design quality, and a collaborative and client-centered process, has led to BAR receiving over 190 design awards. Although we appreciate the recognition, above all else, we believe the most important measure of our success is the satisfaction of our clients and the inhabitants of our buildings. We’re in it for the long term.

Interested in learning more about 3333 Mission Street Project? Come by Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, Community Open House at 3333 Mission Street this Saturday June 8 from 11am-2pm!
Executive Director - Affordable Housing, Housing Development, BIPOC Emerging Developer, Non Profit Management, Community Development, Social Service Programs, Community Organizing
In January 2024, BHHC acquired 3333 Mission Street, the former site of Big Lots, for a proposed 100% affordable senior housing development. This project will bring 70 units of affordable housing for seniors ages 62+, complete with outdoor walking and gathering spaces and a library and computer room, allowing residents to age in place comfortably. Disability-forward features that exceed standard code requirements and the use of sustainable materials contribute to a future-proof building. This project will also allow us to redesign and reinvigorate Coleridge Neighborhood Park and bring new amenities and building upgrades to the existing residents at Coleridge Park Senior Homes. Our project team includes Mitchelville Real Estate Group, Low Income Investment Fund, BAR Architects & Interiors, and Plural. Interested in learning more? Stop by our Community Open House at 3333 Mission Street this Saturday June 8 from 11am-2pm!
