In January of 2024, the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, Twitter (or X), Discord, and Snapchat went before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify as lawmakers and parents grow increasingly concerned about the effects of social media on young people’s lives encompassing both mental health and safety. Here were just a few of the key takeaways from this historic event: 🔘 Lawmakers suggested the companies are to blame for the deaths of children and compared the harms they pose to the tobacco industry. 🔘 Senators pressed the executives to publicly support measures that could expose them to greater liability for facilitating the spread of child abuse material. 🔘 In a dramatic moment, Mark Zuckerberg stood and turned towards rows of families and apologized for child abuse on his platforms. 🔘 Senator Graham said that Zuckerberg had "blood on his hands." Since this podcast was recorded, KOSA and COPPA 2.0 passed the Senate and are on their way to the House.
