“I cannot tell you how many children I see in their bedrooms, on live streams, with tons of people just watching them... asking them to do certain things.” 💔 We’re proud to share this brand-new FULL DOCUMENTARY about the shocking online world your child is growing up in, and to sponsor its free release so every family has access to this important resource. You may be tempted to say, “Not *my* child,” but this new movie reveals just how widespread issues like sextortion, suicidal ideation, and online predation are. 😔 👉 Please share this with your community to help other parents and guardians learn about what their kids are facing — at this very moment. https://bit.ly/32usCYx #Childhood2Movie #SocialMedia #MentalHealth

In January of 2024, the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, Twitter (or X), Discord, and Snapchat went before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify as lawmakers and parents grow increasingly concerned about the effects of social media on young people’s lives encompassing both mental health and safety. Here were just a few of the key takeaways from this historic event: 🔘 Lawmakers suggested the companies are to blame for the deaths of children and compared the harms they pose to the tobacco industry. 🔘 Senators pressed the executives to publicly support measures that could expose them to greater liability for facilitating the spread of child abuse material. 🔘 In a dramatic moment, Mark Zuckerberg stood and turned towards rows of families and apologized for child abuse on his platforms. 🔘 Senator Graham said that Zuckerberg had "blood on his hands." Since this podcast was recorded, KOSA and COPPA 2.0 passed the Senate and are on their way to the House. During his conversation with Titania Jordan of BARK, our COO Bryan Weight emphasized a powerful truth: "When we give our kids a phone, we're not just giving them access to the world; we're giving the world access to our kids." 🌍📱 This critical reminder underscores the importance of safeguarding our children in today’s digital age. ☠ Top most dangerous apps ☠ Bark analyzed popular apps and prepared a report with the top most dangerous when it comes to: - Severe sexual content, - Severe suicidal ideation, - Depression, - Body image concerns, - Severe bullying, - Hate speech, - Severe violence. These apps are especially bad for kids, but probably a lot of you also feel a bit depressed from time to time when looking at "perfect" people traveling around the world with bags of cash in sports cars. 😄 Talk to your kids about it and do what's possible to remove or limit access to these apps. #dangerousapps #socialmediaapps #protectingkids #healthychildhood #stopdepression Source: https://lnkd.in/dBthmnNE

CMO/CPO Bark, co-author “Parenting in a Tech World,” 💪 keeping kids safer online

These guys are heroes. This is DA Investigator Joel Pabelico and K9 Chewie from Riverside California’s DA’s Office - Bureau of Investigation. Joel and Chewie are part of the Riverside County Child Exploitation Team (RCCET). Chewie is an electronic-detecting K9 trained to detect the odor of a chemical compound called triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) that is used in the production of electronics to prevent them from overheating. TPPO has a very specific chemical scent that Chewie (and dogs like him) can be trained to detect. So what makes them heroes? Well - unfortunately there are lot of bad people out there who hide recording devices in stuffed animals to capture children in vulnerable situations, or store CSAM - that’s child sexual abuse material on things like SD cards, USBs, iPads, smart watches, external hard drives, and computers. And when law enforcement shows up to arrest them, and they aren’t forthcoming with that evidence, Chewie gets to work to find that evidence and bring the darkness into the light. These are just two of the amazing champions I met this week at the Global Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation Summit - more to come - thank you to NCOSE National Center on Sexual Exploitation and PHASE Alliance for all you do to #endexploitation

⚠️ Two months ago, I called on Meta to classify the Yahoo Boys under their “Dangerous Organizations & Individuals” policy. 📈 Yahoo Boys are largely responsible for the 18,000% surge of sextortion targeting minors that caused at least 39 teen suicides in the past two years. 🔥 Today, Meta announced the Yahoo Boys are now considered a Dangerous Organization and are banned from Meta’s apps. 🚫 As a result, Meta removed 5,700 Facebook Groups, 200 pages, and 1,300 accounts that were offering to sell scripts and guides to use when scamming people, and sharing links to collections of photos to use when populating fake accounts. (I’ve shared these in previous posts.) 📲 Meta also removed 63,000 Instagram accounts that attempted to directly engage in financial sextortion scams against adults and minors. 🙏🏻 One step in the right direction. Huge thanks to everyone who raised these recommendations and gave a voice to those who are no longer here. 📢 Meta’s announcement: https://lnkd.in/eWAsRu-i
