Superintendent Arellano, thank you for your leadership. We are excited to partner with San Bernardino City USD to transform K-12 math education through coding and robotics!

A second cohort of 33 teachers from the San Bernardino City Unified School District began their C-STEM Academy on Introduction to Teaching Computer Science today! Along with the first cohort, a total of 58 teachers are now on their way to integrate coding and robotics into their classes through the innovative C-STEM K-12 Math, Computer Science, and Engineering Design with Robotics Curriculum, as well as Afterschool and Summer Robotics Programs (https://lnkd.in/gUEnZkAc)! Below are comments from some of the participating teachers. “I'm very excited to start implementing coding in my class. I feel pretty confident in getting them started.” —- Melanie Payne, 3rd Grade Teacher “I learned a lot! I liked all the lessons geared towards math.” --- Jessica Acosta-Johnson, 4th Grade Teacher I learned how to navigate through the curriculum and be able to code. This will be very engaging for my students! I cannot wait to show them! It was wonderful!” --- Brittany Walker, 6th Grade Teacher Teachers, thank you for the opportunity to work with you. Your dedication to helping students accelerate their math achievement is truly an inspiration to all of us! Mauricio Arellano, Randy Clyde, Ed.D.

Please join the workshop, “Getting Ready for the New California Math Framework,” at the 14th Annual C-STEM Pre-Conference organized by UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM) on October 3, 2024 at the UC Davis Conference Center (more info at https://lnkd.in/gj8S4Yum). The California State Board of Education approved a new Mathematics Framework (https://lnkd.in/g_hs3Em9) for K-8 education in July 2023 after a four-year process. The Framework provides strategies to challenge and support all students in deep and relevant math learning to ensure their success. Excellence and equity in math education will be achieved by organizing the curriculum around the investigation of big ideas in mathematics, grounded in rigorous existing state standards, with an emphasis on real-world applications and multidimensional teaching. In this workshop, Professor Harry Cheng from the University of California, Davis, will highlight the changes introduced by the new Framework and offer recommendations for district superintendents and leaders on how to best implement it. He will also discuss how to prepare teachers and staff for the upcoming transformations in math pedagogy and practice. Dr. Harry H. Cheng is a Professor in the UC Davis College of Engineering and Director of the UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM). For more than a decade, he has pioneered efforts to systematically integrate computing and robotics into formal math education from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. Dr. Cheng has received the UC Davis Chancellor's Achievement Award for Diversity and Community, the UC Davis Chancellor's Innovator of the Year award, and the Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Award from the UC Davis Academic Senate.

UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM) is very pleased to announce that Mary Nicely, Chief Deputy Superintendent at the California Department of Education, will give a plenary lunch talk on “The State of Education in 2024” at the 14th Annual C-STEM Conference, to be held on October 4, 2024 at the UC Davis Conference Center (more info at https://lnkd.in/gj8S4Yum). She will talk about various initiatives being carried out by the California Department of Education, such as the new CA Math Framework, AI and CS in K-12 education, literacy in K-12 education, etc. She will also make time for a Q&A session with audience members. Ms. Nicely previously served as Deputy Superintendent for the Information and Technology Branch and Senior Advisor to State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, where she led the Superintendent’s Initiatives Office and focused on recruitment and retention of teachers of color, community schools, and educator housing and public/private partnerships with philanthropy and industry.

The 14th Annual C-STEM Conference will be held on October 4th, 2024, at the UC Davis Conference Center. This year’s theme is “Accelerating Student Achievement in Math, CS & Engineering.” The conference provides a forum for district and school administrators, K-12 STEM teachers, and partners to share their vision, research findings, best practices, and experiences in transforming math education, with a particular focus on closing the achievement gap for at-promise students and English language learners. A group of educators will be recognized with C-STEM awards, and experienced C-STEM teachers will share their best practices, classroom tips, and experiences in transforming math education through hands-on coding and robotics in both formal and expanded learning settings. A half-day C-STEM Pre-Conference will be held on Thursday, October 3rd. Teachers, administrators, and counselors will have the opportunity to connect with UC Davis Undergraduate Admissions, the Early Academic Opportunity Program (EAOP), and College of Engineering directors to learn about the resources and opportunities available to their students. C-STEM/STEAM integrated education workshops and tours of College of Engineering labs and the UC Davis campus will be offered. In the evening, a Networking Reception will allow all participants to connect and share ideas. More info about the conference and early bird registration by 9/4/2024 can be found  at https://lnkd.in/gj8S4Yum

Congratulations to Orange USD on a successful C-STEM professional development! Get ready to integrate coding and robotics into your classroom teaching. The RoboPlay Competition was a fantastic experience!

A new cohort of K-12 teachers at Orange Unified School District has spent the past two weeks enjoying coding and learning how to integrate coding and robotics into their classroom teaching with UC Davis C-STEM Courses 1 and 2. These courses are offered by the Joint UC Davis Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (C-STEM) and UCR Extension Computer Science Supplementary Teaching Credential Authorization Program. The teachers also had the opportunity to explore and experience the engineering design process by building and controlling their own robotic machines to solve real-world challenges in the RoboPlay Competition (https://lnkd.in/ghrHB4gw), a level-playing-field robotics competition for students in grades 3-12. What great teamwork and collaboration! It was such an inspiration to work with you all - we love seeing your passion and dedication to your students! Orange USD has been a long-standing partner with us, and we are so proud of their continued collaboration.  For example, West Orange Elementary, a C-STEM Distinguished School from Orange Unified School District, implemented the C-STEM Math with Robotics curriculum in every grade and each classroom. The percentage of students in the school who met or exceeded the math state standards increased by 25.6% in 2023 compared to 2022. Greg Miller Ernest Gonzalez Randy Kolset Ashley Higuera-Oakes
