SAD BUT TRUE: One of the unspoken issues we discuss in the Basadi Leadership Program for Black Women is how we often sabotage and don't support each other as women, creating more hostility in already challenging work environments. Corporate is very competitive and prevailing narratives such as that of the "First Black, Only Black and Best Black" often work counterintuitively, resulting in even more Black-on-Black competition (Our founder Esme Molefe MBA will talk about this unpopular topic at a later stage). In line with the African value system of Ubuntu/ Botho, we go into our jobs and leadership positions expecting our black sisters who've made it and been there to help us and sometimes they just don't! The reality of this SHOCKS US in what feels like we've just been hit by a ton of bricks! So what's the story behind this and what do we do? Well, there's a lot to the story which needs to be fully unpacked but in the spirit of self-leadership and focusing on what you want, here are a few things you can do: 1. Although, it may feel like personal injury to you, recognize that other people's reactions are about them, not you. That same woman who just won't support you may be going through their own workplace struggles as a black woman. 2. Discuss your support needs with her. If she's not in a position to mentor or coach you, perhaps she can suggest someone who can. 3. If that doesn't work, LET IT GO, and find other mentors and coaches you can reach out to for help and guidance who are willing. 4. Join professional networks and programs like the Basadi Leadership Program for Black Women, where you can learn and grow, and get support from like-minded women. FIND YOUR TRIBE! In the end, no matter the circumstances, the POWER is still in your hands. Our program provides a safe space to acknowledge and address the hard-hitting and often ignored harsh realities of being black women leaders in workplaces that were not designed with them in mind. In the next few weeks, we will be sharing the results of our own 2023 survey study, which echo the findings of Global Citizen and Catalyst Inc. #diversity #equity #inclusion #belonging #diversityequityinclusion #inclusiveleadership #inclusiveworkplaces #inclusiveculture #blackwomen #blackwomenleaders
