Meet Alex Auchter, our San Francisco-based director of growth operations, also known as Battery’s in-house CFO whisperer! We asked Alex a couple of questions—here's what he shared: ✒️ You often advise our portfolio companies on growth and operational issues. What topics come up frequently? 🔷 Metrics, ratios, best in class processes. Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen companies pivot from growth-at-all-costs to responsible growth, and they want to know if they’re on the right track. Benchmarking can be helpful, but every business is different. If there aren’t direct comparables in our portfolio or the public markets, I advise companies to benchmark against themselves: capture as much data as you can, review trends frequently, and always be sure you’re moving in the right direction. I also help companies with collaboration and transparency. Now that many teams are geographically distributed, it's important to bring back the serendipitous interactions that used to come with open-door policies and water cooler conversations. ✒️ What’s your favorite Microsoft Excel function? 🔷 Showing my age here, but for the longest time it was VLOOKUP, obviously. If I wanted to get fancy, maybe INDEX MATCH. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I was recently introduced to XLOOKUP by some of the younger folks on the team, and I’m not going back. It’s basically an INDEX MATCH on easy mode. ✒️ What’s something you learned studying electrical engineering as an undergraduate that helps you in your work today? 🔷 People often think electrical engineering is about designing computer chips that move around zeros and ones. I was more interested in the analog side—think radio waves or alternating current. I learned all about amplifiers, antennas, and power electronics. The real world is analog: light, sound, movement, everything. If you’re designing a complex analog circuit, there is a lot of strategic thinking and problem-solving. And then optimization, with plenty of math along the way. Once you learn to process electromagnetic signals with Fourier transforms, spreadsheets and financial statements are a walk in the park. ✒️ On a typical Sunday morning, what do you find yourself doing? 🔷 I’m a handyman at heart. I like to tinker and fix things. Fixing a leaky faucet or a jiggly door handle before lunch really makes the day. To me, there’s no satisfaction like straightening up a medicine cabinet or brightening a room with a new light fixture. ✒️ If you could open a new Battery office anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? 🔷 Two places: Austin and Quebec. My brother and his wife moved to Quebec City a couple of years ago, and what a beautiful place it is. It’s full of French charm (and food) and is a relatively short flight from our newly revamped NYC office. But Austin is buzzing, with the outdoors, the springs, the best BBQ and tacos. And, of course, a large and growing tech scene. It’s hard to choose!
