About us
The Medical Humanities Program at Baylor University is one of a handful of programs of its kind in the country. Our mission is to provide a truly transformational education for students seeking careers in healthcare, the medical arts and affiliated professions under the guidance of faculty who are committed to compelling scholarship and dedicated to service. We value excellence in teaching integrated with engagement and service to our community. Our program is redefining how undergraduate students who aspire towards careers in and around healthcare can be educated and equipped, not only with an outstanding foundation in the sciences, but also with a rich exposure to the humanities. We seek to provide students with the unique opportunity to consider ethical and spiritual issues they will encounter in healthcare, to explore the deepest meanings of health and healing, and to embrace the sacred nature of their vocation. Our curriculum consists of courses taught by faculty from many other disciplines, including English, religion, philosophy, history, sociology, and psychology. Central to this degree are courses that focus on the role of Christian spirituality in healthcare, the importance of the relationship between patient and practitioner, and the changing nature of healthcare in the 21st century. The faculty in our program have strong ties to the Waco medical community which allows us to offer outstanding opportunities for clinical experience, mentoring and service.

Carlos, a Junior at Baylor University, is pursuing a minor in Medical Humanities. He is currently enrolled in a course titled Supervised Clinical Medicine which has allowed him to shadow a different physician in their respective specialty every week. By the conclusion of the course, he will have shadowed over 30 hours in a variety of specialties ranging from Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Anesthesia, and Hospice Care. He also has the privilege of discussing his experiences with a small cohort of students each week in a seminar-style class which has allowed him to reflect on how these moments of observation will shape his future medical practice in becoming more empathetic, perceptive, and prepared for future encounters in medical training.
