The Abbot Building in Cambridge, MA, a renowned Harvard Square landmark, recently won the 2024 Preservation Massachusetts Mayor Thomas M. Menino Legacy Award. BCA was tasked with evaluating and documenting the building's exterior condition, producing construction drawings and specifications for its restoration, and monitored the restoration work during construction. We're absolutely thrilled to announce that the recently completed preservation of The First Church of Christ, Scientist - The Mother Church Original Edifice and Extension Edifice, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Paul & Niki Tsongas Award from Preservation Massachusetts! This award celebrates the commitment and dedication of our team of experts working over the course of eight years to restore this historic church complex. Working closely with the client, Finegold Alexander (architect for the building interior restoration) teamed with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) (building envelope and structural engineer for the restoration of the building exterior) and Shawmut Design and Construction (construction manager) to restore the building to its original vision while leaving behind no trace of the extensive work that was completed. It's such an honor to be recognized in this way, showcasing our commitment to historic preservation in the Commonwealth. Last week Victor Lundy's Hartford Unitarian Meeting House was formally recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. BCA researched and wrote the nomination for the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in support of the listing process. The Connecticut State Review Board unanimously voted to list the building on the State Register and recommended forwarding the nomination to the National Park Service. BCA initially nominated the Meeting House with state-level significance; however, the Review Board is considering elevating its significance to the national level. BCA takes great pride in contributing to the preservation of this architecturally and culturally significant building. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eWBipatz

History At A Glance: Philadelphia Academy of Music, a cherished National Historic Landmark where several significant events unfolded since its opening in 1857. In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant secured his second-term nomination within these walls. In 1876, the U.S. debut of Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" was performed. Now, the Academy is home to the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet and is part of Ensemble Arts. BCA performed a hands-on assessment of all of the building’s Portland brownstone and brick exterior façade and designed its restoration. BCA also performed a paint analysis of the wood windows and sheet metal cornice to determine original paint colors. An ongoing and multi-phase project, the first project phase which included work at the balcony, received a 2023 Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia Grand Jury Award.

We are delighted to report that Kevin Wohlgemuth was recently elected as the 2024 President of APT Washington D.C. Chapter. Kevin is an Associate Conservator based in Alexandria, VA. Kevin's recent projects have included the restoration of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial roof, which received an Award for Excellence in Design and Construction by the DC Preservation League, and Historic Structure Reports for the Lafayette Park Lodge in Washington, DC and the Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland.

Trinity Church Wall Street wins AIA New York Design Award. Work included hands-on investigation of all plaster wall and ceiling surfaces in order to design appropriate conservation treatments in keeping with the project’s goals for a comprehensive restoration and building systems upgrade. Research and analysis confirmed the plaster walls and vaulted ceilings of the church were originally treated with a faux-masonry pattern. BCA designed a restorative scope of work including stabilization of the existing plaster and reinstatement of the original faux masonry decorative treatment and oversaw the restoration during construction.
