The site of our manufacturing facility in Columbus, Nebraska was hand-picked in the late 1940s by Henry Becton and Fairleigh Dickinson, Jr. after they visited sites in 30 states. As we celebrate its 75th anniversary, it's obvious they made a great choice! The site was established shortly after World War II ended, when the U.S. Department of Defense challenged the company to diversify the geography of where U.S. goods were produced and strengthen the resiliency of the medical supply chain. BD planted roots in the area, becoming an integral part of the community and growing to include three manufacturing facilities that employ more than 2,000 associates who make billions of critical medical devices each year. “What we do is important.” To feel that way after more than 47 years in a job speaks volumes! As our site in Columbus, Nebraska prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary tomorrow, we chatted with two of its longest tenured associates about the place BD holds in the Columbus community, and in advancing the world of health, making billions of critical medical devices each year.  

What do music, dairy farming, video games, the traditional foods of Punjab and AI language models all have in common? These are just few of the session topics our talented and multi-faceted global associates will present during this year’s NEXT Days of Collaboration (NDOC) - a four-day series of 30-minute talks - hosted by our Network for Employee-Led Cross-Company Transformation Associate Resource Group (NEXT ARG). Our people are what make BD great! We empower associates to be their full and authentic selves and through our Associate Resource Groups, we provide platforms for associates to amplify their experiences and capabilities while building deeper connections through shared interests.

When Dustin reflects on his career journey of almost a decade with BD, “growth” is the first word that comes to mind. Change and opportunities might be second and third on his list. He shared, “The 11 representatives that I manage are my customers too. I do everything I can to make sure they are successful in their roles and have the right level of support and help in navigating issues and challenges as they arise, because they will. The difference I’ve learned over the past few years is take a more pragmatic view of issues – look at them as opportunities to do something different; solve the healthcare professionals challenge through a new perspective. Although Danielle enjoyed nearly a decade in the military, it was not her choice to leave. A traumatic brain injury required her to change her occupation, but she viewed it as an opportunity to continue serving her country – just in a very different capacity. She shares, “I wanted to make sure when I took off the uniform and made the transition to the business world that it was aligned to a purpose. I see my role as bringing a unique perspective to BD as I receive on-going care through the VA Healthcare System. In that regard, I am dual-hatted as a vendor as well as a patient. The VA is one of BD’s largest government customers, and as a patient I am motivated to ensure they receive white glove service and support.
