It’s #RedRibbonWeek! BCHD, the Beach Cities Partnership for Youth Coalition, and the cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach are raising awareness about youth substance use during October, which is Youth Substance Use Prevention Month, and Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31. All three cities presented a proclamation to BCHD recognizing October as Youth Substance Use Prevention Month, encouraging public participation in activities that promote awareness, prevention, and support for those affected by substance use. This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is “Life Is a Movie, Film Drug Free”™ to inspire individuals to play their part in fostering safe, healthy, and drug-free communities through dedication and commitment. Join us on our social media and share information and resources on substance use prevention in the Beach Cities. #RedRibbonWeek #LivingDrugFree #beachcitieshealthdistrict #drugfreebeachcities https://lnkd.in/gP8X-N7Y

Creating a healthy beach community in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach.
About us
Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) is a public agency dedicated to providing preventive health services to the community. Since 1955, Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) has provided health and wellness services to the residents of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. Health care districts were founded in California during the late 1940s in response to a lack of medical services in rural areas. State legislature passed the “Local Health Care District Law” authorizing communities to form special districts that built and operated hospitals and health care facilities. BCHD once ran the former South Bay Hospital. We currently focus on keeping people out of hospitals through a variety of preventive programs. As a public agency, BCHD is subsidized by district property taxes, program fees, health care business, lease and investment income. For every tax dollar we receive, we return approximately $4.79 to the community in services and programs.

For the 2023-24 school year, Beach Cities Health District’s Youth Advisory Council took a proactive approach to address one of the most pressing issues facing teens today—substance use. Over the course of the year, Council members dedicated their time and energy to developing five distinct campaigns, each focused on a different substance: fentanyl, cannabis, nicotine, hallucinogens and alcohol. The summer break can often be a time for students to relax and enjoy their free time. This year Redondo Union High School students Ella Chung and Penny Iglesias decided to use their summer to make a positive impact on their community. Both Ella and Penny volunteered at AdventurePlex, a children’s play facility operated by the Beach Cities Health District (BCHD). Their decision to volunteer was motivated by a desire to help others and to gain valuable experience. Despite their busy schedules, Ella and Penny found time for their volunteer work. They assisted with a variety of tasks, including arts and crafts activities, supervision, and cleanup. Their positive attitudes and enthusiasm made a significant impact on the young campers.
