When severe spinal stenosis left Jerry unable to work or even grip everyday objects, he turned to Beacon Medical Group North Central Neurosurgery for help. Under the care of neurosurgeon Dr. Kashif Shaikh, Jerry found a team that listened and collaborated on his treatment plan while respecting his 25-year sobriety. Through precise surgical expertise and dedicated rehabilitation, Jerry received comprehensive care that changed his life. "I couldn't walk a mile before. Now I walk three to nine miles every day," said Jerry, who's back to working full shifts and setting new fitness goals. Today, on National Women Physicians Day, we honor the incredible contributions of women in medicine. We're proud to share an inspiring message from Dr. Kristine Jennings, Program Director at the Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency, who exemplifies the passion and commitment that drives our mission forward: “As a female physician leader and educator, I believe that our greatest impact extends far beyond the patients we treat — it lies in the future we shape. Medicine is not just about knowledge and skill; it is about resilience, compassion and the unwavering belief that we can make a difference. Every challenge we overcome, every barrier we break and every student or resident we inspire paves the way for a stronger, more inclusive profession. We stand on the shoulders of the women who came before us, and it is our privilege to uplift those who will come after us. As a mother of three daughters, I continue to believe in and fight for a brighter tomorrow for them, as so many have done for me. Leadership in medicine is not about authority; it is about service — about using our voices to advocate for change, to champion diversity, and to ensure that every aspiring physician feels seen, heard and valued. “To those forging their own paths in medicine, know this: Your presence in this field matters. Your voice, your perspective and your dedication are shaping the future of health care. Never underestimate the power of your example — your ability to show others that leadership is not about fitting into a mold but about having the courage to redefine it. The work you do today, whether in the clinic, the hospital, the classroom or the boardroom, will leave a legacy that extends far beyond what you can see. Lead with authenticity, teach with passion and never stop believing that you belong exactly where you are. Because you do — and the world of medicine is better for it.”

Celebrating another success, the Downtown Dining Association of South Bend recently presented a check for more than $19,000 to Beacon Children’s hospital from its 2024 Summer Restaurant Week. Combined with last winter’s proceeds, the DDA raised more than $38,000 for Beacon Children's Hospital in 2024, bringing total donations to nearly $275,000 since the partnership began 10 years ago. These contributions from locally owned downtown South Bend restaurants support our locally owned nonprofit health system and the region’s only children’s hospital. The contributions are made possible through the generosity of area diners. "We are truly grateful to the Downtown Dining Association and its patrons for their ongoing support of Beacon Children's Hospital. It’s heartwarming to see how this community continues to come together to care for one another. We are deeply thankful for the generosity shown through both the Winter and Summer Restaurant Weeks," says Jen Tonkovich, director of Women and Children's Services at Beacon. Winter Restaurant Week runs through Feb. 9.
