A makeover of the Beacon Community Impact van, which delivers health services directly to those who need them most, has created a vibrant mobile healthcare unit. This vehicle serves as a means for delivering care and as a symbol of hope and support for the communities it serves. The van is an important part of several Beacon Community Impact programs, including the sickle cell program. "This van allows us to bring these families the resources and education they need, right to their own homes," said Kimberly Green Reeves, executive director, Beacon Community Impact. Ever wondered what vascular surgeons do and what kind of conditions they treat? Vascular surgeons are specialists who diagnose and manage conditions affecting the circulatory system, including arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. Here are some of the key conditions they treat: Aneurysms: Abnormal bulges in the wall of a blood vessel, often in the aorta. These can be life-threatening if they burst, and vascular surgeons repair them to prevent rupture. Aortic disease: Aneurysms or blocked blood flow in the body’s main artery. Vascular surgeons treat thoracic aortic aneurysms, abdominal aortic aneurysms and occlusive arterial disease. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Narrowing of the arteries, usually in the legs, which can lead to pain and mobility issues. Vascular surgeons help restore proper blood flow with stenting and angioplasty. Carotid Artery Disease: Narrowing of the carotid arteries in the neck, which can lead to strokes. Vascular surgeons open these arteries to reduce stroke risk with procedures like TCAR/stenting and endarterectomies. Varicose Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins that can cause discomfort and cosmetic concerns. Treatments include minimally invasive procedures to remove or close off the affected veins. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Blood clots in deep veins, usually in the legs, which can be dangerous if they travel to the lungs. Vascular surgeons use medications and other treatments to dissolve clots and prevent complications. Vascular surgeons play a crucial role in keeping our circulatory system healthy. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these conditions, don’t hesitate to seek advice from a vascular specialist. “I cannot express how it feels to become a homeowner at the age of 60. I thank God for the Habitat for Humanity program and how He used Jimmy Carter to be a blessing not only to me, but to other families as well. I now have a safe place to call my own. Happy birthday, Mr. Carter, as we celebrate you and all of the hope you have brought to us.” Terrie Dixon, who works as a unit assistant at Memorial Hospital, cannot wait to move into her Habitat home in December. Terry expresses the sentiment we’ve heard and again from past and present Beacon associates -- including the past associate in the photo -- who are grateful to President Carter and his late wife, Rosalynn. For more than 30 years, the Carters donated their time and leadership to Habitat to build and improve homes around the world and right here in South Bend. Thank you, Habitat for Humanity, for all you do in our communities. And happy 100th birthday, President Carter!

Childhood obesity isn't just a number — it's a health crisis affecting millions. From headaches and joint pain to life-altering conditions like type 2 diabetes, the consequences are real and serious. This epidemic stems from a complex mix of factors: lack of exercise, overconsumption of fast food and processed snacks, certain medications, and genetic predispositions. "We have to start as parents and adults to set a good example," said Dr. Su Choo Chang from Beacon Medical Group Pediatrics Bristol Street, Elkhart. Beacon is committed to providing its workforce with the cutting-edge tools, advanced technology, and robust opportunities for career development -- all essential elements to thrive in today's dynamic healthcare environment.
