Providing arts-in-medicine programs that improve the quality of life of children coping with serious illnesses.

About us

Beads of Courage, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and teens coping with serious illness, their families, and the clinicians who care for them through our Arts-in-Medicine Programs. We believe in creating a context for caring transactions to transpire through our community and encouragement programs. Since 2005, Beads of Courage, Inc. has established collaborative partnerships in caring with hundreds of hospitals nationally and internationally and worked with several community organizations to make healing happen through the use of beads as a historical art form. Beads of Courage, Inc. is an approved public charity under I.R.S. Code Section 501(c)(3), based in Tucson, Arizona. Our Mission: To provide innovative, arts-in-medicine programs for children coping with serious illness, their families, and the clinicians who care for them. Our Vision: To advance the science of caring. Our Goals: -To transform the bedside experience of caring for children and teens with serious illness with innovative Arts-in-Medicine Programs -To model collaborative strategies to strengthen human connectedness through the gift of beads that bestow honor and express human caring -To contribute to the science, practice, and implementation of evidence-based interventions Our History: Jean Gribbon developed the first Beads of Courage program while working on her PhD in Nursing at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. Her inspiration came from her clinical practice, and from her experiences as a camp nurse at one of Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camps. With the financial support of her family and friends, Jean developed and piloted the Beads of Courage Program at Phoenix Children's Hospital in February 2003. Since then, Beads of Courage has provided arts-in-medicine programs for over 60,000 children and their families coping with serious illness in more than 300 children's hospitals throughout the world.

Beads of Courage and Northwestern Mutual are honored to recognize the many moments that you open your caring heart and share your friendship with the children and families in your care. The Beads of Courage Heart-Hands Bead is a reminder that with the simple coupling of our own two hands to form a heart, we can make a connection that strengthens human caring. The Beads of Courage Heart-Hands Bead was transformed into gold for the 2024 annual Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) bead dedication and is made possible through the creative partnership with APHON, Beads of Courage, and Northwestern Mutual.

I want to invite my clinician friends and for you to invite your clinicain friends to join me for the upcoming Bead Strong Sessions. These Bead Strong Sessions (offered through The Center for Arts in Nursing, a partner organization of Beads of Courage) encourages you to take a few moments to focus on thyself in the midst of an ever demanding world through artistic practice and expression. As caregivers, it is important that we balance the care we provide to others with the care we give to ourselves. Each session is one hour in length. To sign up for a Bead Strong session, do so by the Wednesday before the week of the Session to ensure you receive the materials. All sessions are virtual. If you have any questions, please reach out at Scott@beadsofcourage.org I look forward to being Strengthened together! Peace, Chaplain Scott Program Director Center for Arts in Nursing

WE HAVE 60 DAYS! Please consider a gift to our Forever Home Fund: https://lnkd.in/eqAbn8NF Jean Gribbon our Founder and Chief Mission Officer, shares how you can help make our dream come true. See our current small space and learn how your support will help us secure the building of our dreams! Moving to a larger building where we can house all of our operations under one roof will not only improve efficiency and productivity. It will provide space for volunteers to help us package and mail more than 14 million beads annually. We will be able to hold large fundraising events and host classes to teach beadmaking skills to children and adults. Thank you to Pima Federal Credit Union, our featured volunteer group for your legacy of support for our cause!
