We’re consuming microplastics every single day — up to 12 plastic shopping bags worth per year (according to Environmental Working Group)! It’s not just affecting humans, but also our wildlife and ecosystems. Reducing all packaging is the goal, but when it’s not possible, certified compostable packaging is the next best step! While recycling is a great start, unfortunately, it’s not always as it appears. Businesses may have access to municipal recycling programs, but only #1 & #2 plastics are considered universally recyclable. And even then, less than 5% of plastics get recycled in America each year. The solution? Skip the plastic and opt for Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) compostable packaging like Better Earth. We're grateful to share Savannah's powerful insights from the 2024 Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Summit! 🌱 This event brought together key voices from across the industry, and together we are tackling key issues in compostable packaging and organic waste. Savannah's key takeaways remind us of the urgency and potential: - Certified compostable packaging is a crucial tool for accelerating the transition to a regenerative, circular economy. - Scaling composting infrastructure is critical to divert food waste from landfills, addressing methane emissions. - Clear labeling and third-party certifications like BPI's are essential for reducing contamination. Let’s keep pushing forward to create a sustainable, waste-free future! #CompostablePackaging #SustainableFuture #BPISummit
Thankful to participate in the 2024 Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Summit alongside so many industry friends across the value chain. We took a deep dive into several sticky subjects, ranging from legislation to composter acceptance to brand needs, and I came away more hopeful than ever. From policymakers like Corte Madera’s Mayor Eli Beckman to composters like CompostNow, Black Earth Compost & Dyrt, and to cutting edge research from the Composting Consortium at Closed Loop Partners, I heard loud and clear: - certified compostable packaging is an important tool in our toolbox to accelerate the regenerative, circular economy and transition away from fossil fuels for single-use. - we must collectively scale composting infrastructure thoughtfully and immediately to divert food waste from landfills. Today, organic waste in landfills is the THIRD largest source of fugitive methane emissions, a greenhouse gas 84x more potent than CO2 on a 20-year timescale. - third-party certifications like that from BPI and clear, distinguishable labeling are critical measures to reduce contamination at the compost pile. - This is no silver bullet solution. We must continue to slow down & turn off the tap on all single-use packaging for reusable and refillable alternatives.
