Happy Juneteenth! Restoration is proud to recognize the significance of this day which became a federal holiday in 2021 when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed into law. The origins of Juneteenth commemorate the end of slavery--freeing 250,000 enslaved people in Texas in 1865, two years after the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Since that time, annual commemorative celebrations have continued across the U.S. despite the social injustices and disenfranchisement that people of African descent still endure.
