We are pleased to share a technical article published in the Bulletin Electrosuisse summarizing one of the features of the future Smart Living Lab building as a cutting-edge research infrastructure, which will begin construction in January 2025. This article briefly describes the approach we have taken from the initial design phases to define and plan the building’s active envelope through the architectural and constructive integration of photovoltaic components. This installation is a key element in achieving the defined level of self-sufficiency, while also contributing to exploring pathways for decarbonizing the built environment, its buildings, and infrastructures. As this project is designed to evolve with the researchers who will inhabit it, the building is prepared to accommodate an experimental seasonal hydrogen-based storage system with a cogeneration approach, connected to the building’s domestic hot water production system. This integration aims to achieve highly promising overall efficiencies for this technology when applied to the built environment, whether at the scale of a single building – as in the Smart Living Lab – or at a neighborhood scale, supporting self-consumption communities with multiple buildings and diverse uses. A big thank you to all the industrial partners making this project a reality, especially Groupe JPF, BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN, Weinmann-Energies SA and ZPF Ingenieure AG. Stefan Behnisch Hon FAIA  in an interview at the ISA New Campus Oktoberfest about the approach of using and converting an existing building and how it can be dismantled and used for a material store for future generations.

Last night, we had the pleasure of engaging in a dynamic discussion on the inner and outer workings of energy efficiency in buildings. Our expert panel included Margherita Minissi from Passivhaus Institut Darmstadt, Michelle Lee from BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN, and John Briggs from Fraunhofer USA CMI and the discussion was facilitated by Yannic Arnold, Economic and Scientific Advisor at the German Consulate Boston. Each shared valuable insights on building efficiency from their unique professional perspectives: 🏠 Margherita Minissi highlighted the Passive House principles, and importance of advising and certifying projects for insulation, airtightness and ventilation and more. 🖊️ Michelle Lee spoke about the architect’s role in planning energy-efficient structures and retrofitting existing buildings. 🔧 John Briggs explored the complex engineering behind designing innovative and cost-efficient processes for retrofitting houses with insulated panel blocks.
