The infrastructure sector — which includes everything from roads and railways to wind farms and tunnels — now accounts for roughly 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions. As the world grapples with the effects of climate change, the sector is rethinking how to reduce its carbon footprint while building the future. Learn how our Carbon Analysis capabilities, part of the iTwin Experience, seamlessly integrates design data with your chosen carbon assessment tool to assess and reduce carbon impacts for more sustainable infrastructure. https://bit.ly/3Ye3HVY #sustainability #infrastructure #engineering #technology

Not entirely out of sight, but almost always out of mind, cell towers quietly form the backbone of modern communication. Traditionally, utilities and engineering firms perform labor-intensive processes and on-site inspections for tower maintenance. AI, machine learning, and infrastructure digital twins can help the telecommunications industry with the maintenance methods used to ensure the safety and longevity of these structures. Kalasatama, a former port and industrial area in Helsinki, is transforming to become an enticing residential area for its expected 30,000 population growth by 2040. The 4.5 km tramway from Kalasatama to Pasila, which began operations this Summer, was built to support the region's growth. The Kalasatama-Pasila line included the construction of 11,989m of tracks, 25 tram stop shelters, 34 turnouts, 17 track crossings, 56km of cables, and four power supply substations. The project also involved constructing and enhancing existing roadways as well as pedestrian and bicycle environments. The project aligns with the objectives of the Carbon-neutral Helsinki 2035 action plan that promotes the increase of sustainable modes of transport. Engineering firm Granlund used Bentley software to develop a live 4D view of the project site, improving communication between all stakeholders and construction crews. This enabled Granlund to streamline the scheduling process and optimize resource allocation, reducing on-site construction delays. #construction #engineering #tramline #Helsinki

Medellín, nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” is the capital of Colombia’s mountainous Antioquia province. The rapid growth of the city led to an increase in municipal runoff into the Medellín River. EPM, a public utility company in Medellín worked with IDOM to assess and improve over 2,900 km of its sewage network. Hydraulic modeling data was used to create scenarios for dry and rainy conditions, assessing the hydrological variables with 5, 10, and 25-year return periods, and current and projected population data for 10 and 30 years. Each scenario aims to produce results regarding network capacity, overflow analysis, speed, and network issues, such as zero spills and in dry weather for critical components like spillways, among others. These hydraulic models and other resources played a role in protecting water sources and reducing the environmental impact due to sewage overflow. #hydraulicmodeling #wastewatermanagement #water #utilities #engineering #infrastructure #colombia

Earlier this month, we held our 2024 Year in Infrastructure and Going Digital Awards in Vancouver. The annual event focused on how AI, digital twins, and open data ecosystems are transforming infrastructure. Big announcements were revealed - a strategic partnership with Google, OpenSite+, and Carbon Analysis Capabilities in iTwin. Then, we wrapped up with the celebration of the year's most outstanding infrastructure projects and hashtag#YII2024 winner announcements. Here's a look at a few, of many, great "Oscars of Infrastructure" moments. Watch now. 🎞️ #engineering #innovation #technology #digitaltwins #AI #iTwin

The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) is the Philippines' tallest and longest bridge. One of the Philippines’ most impressive infrastructure projects, which opened in April 2022, cut travel times from Mactan to Cebu International Airport by 40 minutes. Stretching 8.9km across the Mactan Channel, the CCLEX was constructed to relieve congestion on the existing inter-island crossings. Before the four-lane, 27m-wide expressway opened in 2022, Cebu was connected to Mactan by only two bridges to the north. Since the southern bridge’s opening, CCLEX has been relieving traffic congestion on the two original bridges and has hosted marathons and Ironman competitions contributing to improved regional tourism and the local economy. The CCLEX was first proposed in 2014 in an area vulnerable to typhoons with winds as strong as 250km/hr, requiring a structural design that can withstand high seismic activity. Engineering firm Sener performed multidiscipline modeling and analysis, enabling engineers to make geometry adjustments to ensure design compatibility between the structures. Collaboration between the geotechnical and bridge design and construction teams with the help of Bentley software enabled them to optimize the bored pile diameters for the main bridge and viaducts. With these optimized calculations the design teams reduced the dimensions of the foundations and minimized the impact on the coral seabed. The improved collaboration also helped to reduce coordination times to review and approve design before construction. The Port of Antwerp is one of Europe's largest and busiest ports. The dense metropolis is home to about 1.2 million people and is central to a huge network of railway lines and highways leading to surrounding countries and cities. The Oosterweel Connection, also known as the “De Grote Verbinding” (The Great Link) project has been designed to prepare the city for sustainable mobility. Engineering firm Sweco Nederland designed the 5.5-kilometer highway, using Bentley software, to close the ring road around the city and completed the complex road redesign within eight weeks. This enabled them to share the 3D models between specialized design teams and stakeholders. As one of Europe's largest infrastructure projects, the link provides the final missing part of the ring road relieving traffic congestion while reducing noise pollution. The project also includes new parks and 30 kilometers of cycling paths.
