Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics Division at Berkeley Lab
About us
The Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics Division supports Berkeley Lab and the US Department of Energy’s mission by inventing particle accelerators to explore and control matter and energy, and enhancing the next-generation scientific workforce by mentoring students and postdoctoral scholars. • Accelerator modeling includes preparation for exascale supercomputing, machine learning, and quantum information systems. Our approach is based on deep collaboration among physicists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists — a synergy of LBNL strengths. • ALS Accelerator Physics: ATAP provides accelerator physics and operations support for LBNL's Advanced Light Source, a user facility that serves scientists from many fields by providing laserlike beams of soft x-rays. ATAP has been integral to the many enhancements of the ALS through its history and are helping design its upcoming major upgrade. • Laser-plasma acceleration has potential for making accelerators smaller and more affordable. BELLA Center uses one of the world’s most powerful lasers in its campaign toward the next landmark in LPA energy and is developing numerous spinoff applications. • Magnet technology: Stronger, cost-effective accelerator magnets are a key to future accelerators. We create both evolutionary improvements and paradigm shifts in the design and application of these magnets. Our highly collaborative efforts include the US Magnet Development Program and the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. • Accelerator controls and instrumentation provides the "eyes and ears" and “knobs” of some of the most complex and subtle scientific instruments ever devised, and is a longtime area of ATAP expertise contributing to many DOE projects. • Ion beam technology integrates expertise and technologies from ATAP’s deep roots in accelerator design and the quest for fusion energy to support fields as diverse as quantum computing, innovative accelerators, and numerous industrial applications.
