Brands such as American Freight Appliances & Furniture are using Pinterest to capture the attention of Gen Z consumers. “I love making mood boards, so I try to find niche trends on Pinterest and then I’ll go to TikTok to see if that trend is in motion or if a certain product is in motion,” Olivia Meyer, a member of “The Z Suite,” said during a panel at the eTail™ East conference on Tuesday in Boston. “How are other people my age styling this piece? Is it functional? Is it good quality? So, [I’m] getting a sense of validation to a certain extent from TikTok, but starting at Pinterest.” Naomi B., another member of the “Z Suite,” said she also starts her path to purchase at Pinterest. “I think it just has such a huge base of so much inspiration,” she said. “Gen Z likes to kind of go off vibes,” she added, laughing. First Insight, Inc. CEO Greg Petro recently joined Bloomberg Radio to discuss his new book, "The Tyranny of Now: How Technology Impairs Good Judgement, and What You Can Do About it," and the dangers of impulsive decision-making in today's fast-paced world. Petro highlighted how the pressure to respond immediately can lead to costly mistakes, citing the example of the Southwest Airlines CEO's premature email send. The pandemic further exacerbated this trend, with rapid shifts like the migration from cities to suburbs driving up housing prices and contributing to a decline in thoughtful decision-making as some home buyers struggle to recoup their investments. Petro emphasized the growing impatience in society and how the Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's warning on social media underscored the challenges it poses, fostering tribalism, tunnel vision, microsegmentation, and empty echo chambers. Petro stressed the critical need for diverse perspectives to counteract confirmation bias and its dopamine-fueled reinforcement, which can create dangerous blind spots in decision-making. He also pointed to the alarming trend of declining IQs over the past 40 years, raising questions about the long-term implications for society.
