🌫 Yesterday, the EU gave its formal approval on updating the Ambient Air Quality Directive #AAQD 👏 With stronger binding limits for the major air pollutants threatening health and the environment, EU member states can commit to stronger action to reduce pollution levels. 🌍✨ Insights and Interactions at BEST-COST General Assembly 2024 BEST-COST EU I'm thrilled to share highlights from recent BEST-COST General Assembly 2024 in Rottermdam which focused on enposure-response functions, environmental health, and health economic evaluations. These sessions were not only intellectually stimulating but also fantastic for networking!

It's a wrap on the #BestCostEU General Assembly 👏🏻 Our discussions took us from updating calculations on #BurdenOfDisease and #HealthImpactAssessment, to designing Willingness to Pay surveys, to looking ahead at implementing our methodologies in case study countries. A busy two days were spent to cover the progress so far into measuring the health costs of pollution - and ideas to move the project forward. 🌳 Our health is deeply connected to the health of the planet. Without a healthy environment, we are more at risk of developing life-threatening illnesses or having symptoms worsened by environmental stressors such as air and noise pollution. Why is #AirQuality a socioeconomic issue? 🌫 9 out of 10 people breathe air that is unsafe - causing sickness, deepening inequalities and hampering economic growth. 🌫 Air pollutants also accelerate the climate crisis. Reducing pollutants could slow the rate of global warming by up to 0.5°C by 2050. 🌫 Around 99% of the planet breathes air that the World Health Organization considers polluted, but it is the most marginalised who suffer the most from dirty air, and this widens already existing inequalities. How can governments help? By setting and implementing stricter air quality standards, and using frameworks in development by #BestCostEU to understand the socioeconomic costs of pollution – they can invest in effective measures to protect our health. #CleanAirNow #CleanAirForBlueSkies
