It took me a couple of weeks to process my experience at the Outside Festival, and I’m grateful my ideas were able to find a home at The Colorado Sun. I am endlessly inspired by the people I meet within the outdoor industry but the focus on brand activations and giveaways at consumer outdoor events has made me deeply concerned about the state of our industry. Being outside has always been about forming a connection to nature, the people around us, and ourselves. Our industry should be a beacon for environmental stewardship and public health, zeroing on the mental and physical benefits we’ve all experienced when recreating outside. None of this should be surprising, but our values become buried when we design experiences that measure and optimize for the wrong outcomes. It’s time for heart-led leadership, and I’ll be writing more about what that means to me in the coming weeks. In the meantime, let me know whether or not this essay resonates with you. When Bewilder’s after school program began I was stressed, overwhelmed, and anxious about how everything would come together, but in the past few months I’ve learned to believe, trust, and rely on the incredibly talented and good-hearted people who signed up for the adventure and consistently bring our ideas to life. Our guides have left their mark on our program in major and meaningful ways: their unique teaching styles have been illuminating, their empathy inspiring, and their energy infectious. Each week has been a lesson in resilience as we try, occasionally fail, and sometimes succeed in inspiring city kids to get excited about nature. The work is challenging and our mission is ambitious, but creating something new is never neat or easy. When our vision aligns with our students though, the experience feels magical, and I’m grateful I get to share these moments with people who equally care and recognize how important they are. We’re on winter break until late-January (whew!), and we’re looking to hire more instructors and operational managers this month.
