A graduate of Memorial High School and UW-Milwaukee, Irene Katana participated in the AVID/TOPS program, which prepares students for college and careers through the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. During a break from her university studies, Irene secured an internship with Dane County Planning and Development, thanks to connections she had built through the Club. Her interest in engineering drew her to the role, and her performance led to a five-year position as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) employee. While working, Irene explored new interests, particularly in agriculture and the environment, which motivated her to return to school. She pursued an associate’s degree at Madison College and later earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in biological systems engineering from UW-Madison. Her expertise in GIS and networking skills opened the door to a new opportunity in Texas, where she became an environmental engineer, focusing on improving water quality. Irene’s success highlights the value of real-world experience, networking, and taking the time to discover one’s passions. She believes that building strong connections and gaining practical experience are just as important as formal education when it comes to navigating career paths and finding opportunities. What a spook-tacular workshop! 🎃 Last Friday, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County hosted a Teen Workshop where students built concrete pumpkin planters. They had hands-on experience mixing concrete and using tools like a shovel and trowel. Safety is key in all our workshops, and students learned about protecting themselves from burns, eye irritation, and silica exposure by wearing personal protective equipment and working in well-ventilated areas. Each student brought home their planter to present as a gift to a friend or family member, or decorate their living space. #YouthDevelopment #SafetyFirst #BGCDC #CareerforceBuildUP! #construction #careerexploration

Sebastian Bahena, a 2022 graduate of LaFollette High School, exemplifies the success of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County's AVID/TOPS program. As a participant since 2016, Sebastian benefited from the program's college and career readiness support, which ultimately led to his summer internship with the Dane County Office for Equity and Inclusion (OEI). This opportunity, facilitated by the Boys & Girls Club's partnerships, has provided Sebastian with valuable insights into potential career paths and reinforced his aspiration to make a positive difference in his community. Currently pursuing a Business Management degree at Madison College, Sebastian continues to give back as a member of the Men of Excellence program, supporting fellow students of color on campus. His journey from high school student to intern and college student showcases the lasting impact of the AVID/TOPS program on its participants' lives and future success.
