CEO at Workiz * Startup Builder & Investor * Growth Hacker * Changing the service industry one job at a time
Walking into a Starbucks last week, I saw something that perfectly summed up the nonsense that can come with enterprise security. The restroom code wasn’t just visible—it was plastered twice, on both the door and the lock. Clearly, Starbucks management wanted to ensure restroom security, but in reality, it was killing productivity. Customers kept asking the Barista for the code over and over again till they solved it the worst yet simple possible way - taping the code to the lock. It made me think of software security. We often create layers of protection that make sense on paper but feel absurd in the real world. Sometimes, in our effort to lock things down, we overlook how security impacts day-to-day use. The result? Complexity that helps no one.
