Biking not only provides physical benefits, but mental benefits, too. Whether riding alone or with your buddies, not much beats being outside enjoying exercise and clearing your mind. Today marks the 20th Wounded Warriors Ride in NYC. This annual event provides the opportunity for our Nation’s Veterans to gather in friendship, and accomplish a challenge. Many are missing limbs and certainly many have PTSD, yet they hop on bikes and trikes and “pedal” their way to a destination. Bike World salutes these hero’s and their determination to move on with life, meeting challenges most of us cannot fathom. Ride on friends!

Raccoon River Valley Trail updates: The connection between the Trail and the Trestle Trail has been delayed due to construction issues. Originally the opening was scheduled for August 17th with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The contractor is now hoping for completion by Labor Day. The ceremony has not yet been rescheduled, yet. As soon as the RRVT Association is notified of a completion date and ceremony rescheduling we will post an update! Also, improvements to the bridge crossing over the river on the east side of Adel will be starting within the next week. That will require closing the trail over that bridge for several months with no “bypass”. While inconvenient, the planned improvements including replacing approaches, railings and surfaces sound like a nice upgrade. It is estimated the work will be completed by mid October.

For those of you that ride the Raccoon River Trail - there are some updates! The overpass construction just north of Kinship should be completed “no later than the end of May” according to the City of Waukee. Seems like forever, but no there is finally “ light at the end of the tunnel”. 😆 (PUN intended). Also, the old depot in Minburn is open again with the Mexican restaurant moved in. I stopped in a few days ago on a ride and the family owned staff are very friendly and are planning entertainment along with the great food. The Handlebar in Dallas Center was also packed when I rode by, which is great news, too! Let’s make it a point to stop by all the businesses along our bike trails to keep them going strong. Having them is a bonus attraction for visitors as well as our local riders.

The Raccoon River Trail is celebrating the 35th year of existence! The Association Board is hosting several 35 mile rides this year as a fun way to celebrate the longest paved trail in the US. This Saturday (27th) there is a ride from the trailhead in Dallas Center to Perry and back starting at noon (weather permitting🤞🏼), with option of riding to the connector in its finishing stages hooking up to the Trestle Trail! Dr. Deming and the Above + Beyond Cancer Team will be joining. It is a family friendly event and riders can ride the miles they want. The ride is free but it is suggested that you visit www.raccoonrivertrail.org and click on the 35th ride button to register and/or get more information. In the event weather causes cancellation that registration will allow contact by email of the status.
