Investing in a mobile laser scanner, or any scanner for that matter, like the following (links included) is a significant decision and there are a lot of considerations. However, project costing vs overall business costing are imperative to consider prior to such an investment. So what do your options look like if you are trying to get significant time savings for capturing your data? Option 1: You could probably get around the project time savings as shown by that Navvis link with any of these systems. But first, you have to make a sizable investment in hardware and then iron out the new field process with potentially a new hire with some lead time for testing data capture for effective usage in your process. Then identify your control and QC methodologies and incorporate the additional practices. You would then also calculate the payments with high interest rates on the loan, wear and tear and life of the hardware, amortization, insurance increases, potential hardware downtime and support options/costs, risk potential, and other potential downstream effects for your types of sites and deliverable process. If you had a project tomorrow, it wouldn't happen with this new hardware. Unless you just made too much money in 2023 and don't have to worry about such things! Option 2: You could get the same time and cost reductions, add margin and capacity, without the risks, and without additional investments or internal staff by working with a company like BIM4Sites. And you could do that today. Lastly, this is not meant to dissuade anyone from investing in a mobile laser scanner! It's just that we've seen a lot of really expensive paper weights sitting around because Option 1 considerations are missed, or someone is not aware of option 2.
