We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Alex Nikulin, Associate Professor of Earth Science at Binghamton University, has been named a 2024 recipient of the prestigious Binghamton Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Discovery (EXCEED) Seed Translation Research Project (STRP) award! 🎉 This award includes $150,000 in funding and personalized mentorship to help bring innovative ideas to market. Dr. Nikulin's groundbreaking project focuses on creating a cutting-edge drone and ground vehicle system to detect and mark unexploded ordnance in conflict zones. By improving the speed, safety, and reliability of land clearing, this technology will make a powerful impact in enhancing safety for residents in conflict and post-conflict regions. Innovation to Impact: Inventor Highlight #11: Lei Yu 💻 In our final Innovation to Impact series feature, we are highlighting Binghamton University former Associate Professor of Computer Science Lei Yu. Dr. Yu has secured a patent for a groundbreaking framework that enhances the learning process of autonomous systems through "Diverse Exploration." This method allows AI systems to explore and improve decision-making faster and more safely by minimizing risks during exploration. Innovation to Impact: Inventor Highlight #8 - Linjun Yin and Umur Ciftci 🔬💡 As part of our ongoing Innovation to Impact series, we're excited to recognize Dr. Linjun Yin, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Umur Ciftci, Research Assistant and Professor of Computer Science at Binghamton University! Dr. Yin and Professor Ciftci have secured a groundbreaking patent for a revolutionary method of detecting deepfakes (videos altered to look like real people) by analyzing hidden biological signals, like heart rate, from facial features in videos. Since these signals are hard to replicate in synthetic videos, this technology distinguishes between real and fake content by using a machine learning approach that looks for irregularities in both the time and spatial consistency of these signals, achieving high accuracy in detection. Congratulations to them both on this remarkable achievement!
