Our Chief Design Officer Dr. Amy Congdon, PhD recently joined Ecosystems: The Podcast. The discussion focused on how biofabrication has the power to transform industries like fashion and consumer goods, by offering sustainable materials and ingredients cultivated from living organisms. Amy shared thoughts on bioinnovation’s potential to reduce our dependence on petrochemicals to support a circular, regenerative future. She also spoke to the complexities of scaling and the need for cross sector collaboration: “We’re on the verge of a materials revolution—where living organisms can create sustainable solutions, and the challenge is scaling these innovations responsibly.” Tune in to learn how brands are adopting biofabricated materials, the hurdles to market, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between designers, scientists and beyond. 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eyMQyUty #Biofabricate #BioMaterials #RegenerativeFuture #EcosystemsPodcast #TextileDesigner #TissueEngineering #Biofabrication #Biomaterials #MaterialScience

“Navigating the intersection of design and biology.” In a recent interview for Swan Magazine, our Chief Design Officer Amy Congdon discusses the use of biofabricated materials in the design industry and explores their future applications. She also highlights how designers can influence conversations around the ethical and practical aspects of sustainable design. Pick up a copy or visit the Nautor Swan website to read the full interview (pages 10 & 11) - https://lnkd.in/ey-fJCFa “We believe that it’s vital that design is integrated from the start, not just to ‘make things pretty’ at the end. A true collaboration between science and design will ensure that we develop materials that are fit for purpose, desirable and push the boundaries of what’s possible. At Biofabricate we also think very broadly about design - from the design of an organism to the design of a material, right up to the design of a product. There are so many key areas where design can play a pivotal role. The power of biology is that we can create materials and products that have never been seen before.” #Biofabricate #design #innovation #biomaterials #biotechnology #pioneers #bioinnovation #biotech #synbio #biobased #biodesign #biomaterials #sustainableluxury #futurefashion #futurebeauty #futureautomotive #futurefurniture #futureyacht #NautorSwan

On Tuesday, we had the privilege of witnessing Danish brand Ganni A/S’s debut at #PFW with their standout collection, ‘The Craft’. The collection was a showcase of sustainability and next-gen materials with their ‘Fabrics of the Future’ initiative woven throughout 💚 ♻️✨ Of the bioinnovators on display a special congratulations to Maria Intscher-Owrang and the Simplifyber team on the unveiling of their sneakers, featuring intricately molded uppers crafted from biobased Fybron™(made from cellulose). 🖤👟 Also on the runway were numerous pieces made out of Polybion’s bacterial cellulose material Celium™. Including a Scandi-cool blazer and shorts combo 💙 Other next-gen materials were in the spotlight too, with an Oleatex coat paired with a hand-knit vest from Circulose yarn, and ballerina flats crafted from Pélinova® by Tencel Studio. 🌱👗 Overall it was encouraging to see that although they were no longer showing in Copenhagen, Ganni remains steadfast in sticking to the fashion week’s 18 minimum sustainability requirements, alongside their own. But most importantly it is heartening to see the brand double down on their support of next-gen materials and innovators. It's a passion, and commitment, that Founder Nicolaj Reffstrup spoke about during our last Paris Summit and is echoed throughout the company. “The future of fashion is here, and it is driven by innovation and responsibility,” said Ditte Reffstrup, Creative Director at GANNI. “This collection embodies courage, empowerment, and connection, while pushing boundaries in both design and material science. Our Fabrics of the Future program truly feels like magic.” ✨ 💚 Find out more about the show and the next-gen materials used here: https://lnkd.in/et2gS4_B #ParisFashionWeek #Biofabricate #biomaterials #biotechnology #pioneers #bioinnovation #biotech #synbio #biobased #biodesign #luxury #futurefashion #Ganni #gannigirls #GanniLab #Fabricsofthefuture #simplifyber #Fybron #polybion #celium #oleatex #Pélinova

Promising a spotlight on our community, the Biofabricate Membership launches today with an article from our very own CEO and Founder Suzanne Lee. A biomaterial pioneer, growing microbial materials for fashion since 2003, Suzanne has penned insights into the world of biomaterial leather alternatives. She explores the importance of design, how to identify your design point of view, and why it's vital to arm yourself with design talent. "Over 20 years ago, I ventured into biomaterials—not out of environmental concerns, but as a science fiction fan and fashion designer captivated by their vast potential. Today, we are on the cusp of a revolutionary era in fashion, footwear, interiors, and beyond—if only innovators and investors possess the audacity to allow design to steer the course. "Your material can be so much more!" With Design Season in full force now is the time to digest this fascinating read. To celebrate the launch of our Membership, this thought-leadership piece will remain free and accessible to all. Further insights from industry leaders and innovators will be available exclusively through our Professional Membership.
