About us
BIOFIN is a UNDP-managed programme that supports countries with a methodology that provides innovative steps to measure current biodiversity expenditures, assess financial needs, identify the most suitable finance solutions and provides guidance on how to implement these solutions to achieve their national biodiversity target. The BIOFIN methodology takes shape through three assessments that culminate in a Biodiversity Finance Plan. The steps include: - The Biodiversity Finance Policy and Institutional Review (PIR) looks into the policy and institutional context for biodiversity finance in the country and establishes which are the key stakeholders to involve. - The Biodiversity Expenditure Review (BER) is an analysis of public and private expenditures in the country that benefit biodiversity. The assessment establishes past, present and projected expenditures on biodiversity. - The Financial Needs Assessment (FNA) estimates the finance required to deliver national biodiversity targets and plans, usually described in the NBSAPs. - The Biodiversity Finance Plan (BFP) identify and prioritises a mix of suitable biodiversity finance solutions to reduce the biodiversity finance gap. The last component of the BIOFIN process is the implementation phase. The BIOFIN national teams make a selection between the prioritised finance solutions and provide technical support for their implementation.

Animal Town, a game app from the #Philippines, has attracted almost 20,000 global users since its launch last March. BIOFIN #Philippines developed "Animal Town" to engage players in conservation topics while generating financial support for biodiversity initiatives. Although still in its early stages, Animal Town uniquely integrates conservation messaging into mobile gaming, tapping into the Philippines' gaming community of over 30 million gamers, who spend an average of $13 each annually on their favorite apps. With mobile gaming rapidly gaining popularity, Animal Town demonstrates the potential of digital innovation to raise environmental awareness and funds for biodiversity conservation. The Forest Foundation Philippines will manage funds generated through the game, ensuring transparency and effective allocation to conservation projects. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/drbFipWf 📲 Download the game: • Apple App Store (iOS): https://lnkd.in/dark4r8U • Google Play Store (Android): https://lnkd.in/dVqSuGEC UNDP Philippines ThinkBIT Solutions Lord Christian Gosingtian Anabelle Plantilla Angelique Ogena Abbie Trinidad

UNDP Thailand and Krungthai Bank partner to advance sustainable finance and biodiversity conservation in Phetchaburi, #Thailand. The initiative focuses on restoring mangrove forests and improving biodiversity in the region. As part of this initiative, UNDP BIOFIN and the Governor of Phetchaburi, Police Lieutenant Popjanok Jalanugrah, have signed a Letter of Intent, transforming sustainability goals into concrete actions. This collaboration addresses climate change, biodiversity loss, and gender equality at the community level. During the visit, the delegation explored the Baan Tham Rong community, where Thai Iron Chef "Chef Pruek" prepared signature dishes that showcase sustainable local cuisine and the reduction of food miles. This initiative supports the circular economy, cultural tourism, and environmental conservation. The delegation also visited the Pak Thale Ecotourism Information Centre, which was established with support from BIOFIN - Biodiversity Finance Initiative, Krungthai Bank, Raks Thai Foundation, and the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand. This center plays an important role in educating visitors about migratory bird conservation and sustainable living. By empowering local communities and promoting biodiversity conservation, UNDP and Krungthai Bank are paving the way for a future where economic growth and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. 🔗 Source: https://lnkd.in/drGMwq2Z Bangkok Post Niran Nirannoot

🟢 Spotlight on Colombia 🇨🇴 #WorldWildlifeDay Photo-Story 📸 #2 UNDP, CITES and #InternationalGeneva Working for the State of Geneva are highlighting global examples of wildlife conservation finance in action. This photograph was taken in Colombia - which is home to nearly a tenth of the world’s biodiversity - by Magnum Photos photographer Ferdinando Scianna, in 1987. In 2022, the landmark Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework called for innovative financial instruments to accelerate the preservation and restoration of priority ecosystems. PNUD Colombia, the BIOFIN - Biodiversity Finance Initiative and Fasecolda - Federación de Aseguradores Colombianos are answering the call, implementing innovative insurance solutions to protect biodiversity in Colombia 🟩 Solutions to guarantee the outcomes of investments in conservation projects, habitat banks, and help mitigate human-wildlife conflicts are being designed with South Pole, Previsora Seguros S.A, Aon and PIPRA Solutions 🟩 Other innovative projects include the development of parametric insurance schemes to protect ecosystems against forest fires working with WWF Colombia and SURA.
