"Personal growth is especially enticing when the habitat is the dramatic, rich landscape of New Mexico." After its grand opening this past spring, the Modern Elder Academy's new Santa Fe location was named one of Time Magazine's 100 World's Greatest Places for 2024 https://lnkd.in/eCG4Jh7w! Biohabitats helped the Modern Elder Academy develop innovative, sustainable water infrastructure that aligns with the academy's principles, the site’s arid climate, and its proximity to Galisteo Basin Preserve, a large conservation-based community development with thousands of acres of protected grasslands and arroyos. We apply the science of ecology to restore ecosystems, conserve habitat, and regenerate natural systems.
About us
Mission: Restore The Earth And Inspire Ecological Stewardship. Our practice can best be defined as a blend of sound science, place-based design and ecological democracy. It is rooted in deep ecology with an underpinning that all species have equal rights, and that we have an ethical obligation to ensure that our actions do not interfere with their evolutionary potential. It is ingrained with the intent to design with ‘place’ and all of its complexity, diversity and life. And it is infused with a sense of compassion, fairness and equity for all peoples and their communities. Science forms the core of our practice. Science that is as informed by rigorous field investigations and meticulous research as it is from knowing the land and learning its stories. While the science provides us with the facts, stories provide the context to help us see things from a whole-systems perspective. Patterns, connections and relationships continually reveal themselves through stories, providing a rich tapestry of life that forms the basis of our design ethos.

“We think this approach can be replicated at many other compromised waterfronts to improve environmental health in urban conditions. It’s a great way of connecting people to water and educating the public about water and ecological issues.” — Amelle Schultz, principal landscape architect and planner. Honored to have presented the Charleston Water Plan to City Council last night. This plan represents the culmination of extensive effort, including community engagement, modeling, GIS analyses & mapping, and thorough research. I’m thrilled to see our hard work come to fruition and be shared with the public. Explore the full StoryMap, download a summary PDF, or watch last night's presentation via the link to the City's site below. https://lnkd.in/dcDg3f7e The Post & Courier has also provided a nice summary of the meeting and the plan. https://lnkd.in/eFxmwDpj Andy Sternad, AIA, AICP David Waggonner Stephen O'Connell, P.G. Are you passionate about creating projects that not only coexist with nature but actively regenerate it? Come learn how at the Building Transformation Forum taking place Thursday September 12th at Mithun, Pier 56 in Seattle! The Biodiversity and Nature Positive Session with Brightworks and Biohabitats will be starting at 11am followed by a Biophilic Design Charrette with Glumac & Site Story at 3pm. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dmAgBtWz 🌿 This session will explore methods of applying nature-positive strategies to projects of varying scales and types, in a manner that demystifies the complexity of creating a truly regenerative project by learning from the local ecosystem, local habitat, history of place, and other key factors. 🌿 We will begin with an overview and alignment on what is meant by Biodiversity, Nature-Positive, and Regenerative Design, as well as a glimpse at current market trends, policies and ESG frameworks developing rapidly in this area. Biohabitats and Brightworks will present a flexible framework for nature-positive projects that guides teams through each step of the design process and through onsite monitoring of built work. Participants will break into groups to work through the initial steps of site assessment and goal setting for real-world client scenarios. When the groups get back together to report out and compare their findings, the team will share a few takeaways from the actual projects that inspired the scenarios. Please come join us for an informative session with Alexandra Ramsden, LEED AP, WELL AP, Jessica Hardesty Norris, and Pete Munoz, PE. #Sustainability #RegenerativeDesign #NaturePositive #Biodiversity
