The contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) space appears to be set up for a significant rebound in the coming years, according to data pre-released from the CPHI Annual Report and Survey. This comes ahead of the CPHI Milan conference that the Bourne Partners team will be attending this week. Specifically, the CPHI data suggests that ~49% of the CDMO industry is “highly positive” on contract services over the next 18 months (vs 44% who are "neutral" and only 7% who were “negative”). Two top areas of focus for executives are manufacturing capacity shortages (related to the strong consumer demand for GLP-1 medications) and the impact of the BIOSECURE Act on global pharma supply chains. Of note, only 19% agreed that China-based CDMOs are “a threat and should be removed from Western supply chains” -- vs 38% of respondents who said that the BIOSECURE Act “sets a concerning precedent for the industry.” This optimism going into the CPHI Milan conference closely follows similar optimism that we heard at the Contract Pharma 2024 Contracting and Outsourcing Conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey (September 26-27). At a presentation we attended by BioPlan Associates, Inc., CDMO bioprocessing demand is expected to reaccelerate to 10%-14% annually (vs 8.5% in 2023 and 2024) -- essentially in line with pre-COVID demand trends. Key drivers for CDMO demand that came up in our discussions include, among others, access to specialized staff, innovative biologics (e.g., cell/gene therapies, antibody-drug conjugates, etc.), emerging markets, novel production technologies (e.g., continuous bioprocessing, single-use, etc.), and capital avoidance (especially for smaller developers).
