  • Did you catch Governor Newsom's announcement of a new California Jobs First Economic Blueprint? It’s a statewide plan built with input from 13 regional plans (including ours, which BioscienceLA contributed to as bioscience table co-lead with the Larta Institute) to drive sustainable economic growth, innovation, and access to good-paying jobs over the next decade. This is a major moment for the Greater LA bioscience community and BioscienceLA. At BioscienceLA, we are especially thrilled to see Sacramento recognize the life sciences as a foundational pillar of California's economy and global leadership. With the state's renewed commitment to bioscience innovation, Greater LA has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to claim its place as a global life science “mega-hub”. • When we talk about bioscience innovation hubs, we must challenge our thinking. We are not aspiring to be “the next San Diego, Bay Area, or Cambridge”—we’re creating something entirely different and more ambitious. Howard Fine’s article in the Los Angeles Business Journal illustrates why. Fifty years ago, it wasn't in Cambridge or the Bay Area where one of the first therapeutic uses of recombinant DNA technology emerged—it was in Duarte, in our own San Gabriel Valley. This groundbreaking work by researchers Arthur Riggs and Keiichi Itakura, at the City of Hope, collaborating with then-startup Genentech, revolutionized diabetes treatment globally. Today, City of Hope's continued excellence, with nearly $1.4 billion in NIH grants since 1985 and pioneering work in CAR-T cell therapy, exemplifies the innovative spirit that defines our region. Continuing its legacy of leadership in bioscience in the region, City of Hope is one of the founding sponsors of BioscienceLA and remains a pillar of our bioscience ecosystem. Another one of our region’s treasures … and another reason why we challenge our thinking and push the bounds of the vision of what a “Greater LA Mega-hub” can be.  Check out more in the article here: https://lnkd.in/e2qKagFD

  • "In 2024, we launched a bold branding initiative to define and amplify our region’s bioscience identity. This isn’t just a campaign; it’s a movement—one that unites stakeholders under a shared story, celebrates our collective achievements, and ensures that every innovator, researcher, entrepreneur—can see themselves as part of a greater whole. Now, we embark on our next pivotal initiative: the BioscienceLA Asset Map. Imagine a dynamic, data-driven tool that quantifies our strengths—our workforce, research centers for a given discipline, innovation funding, corporate diversity, economic contributions, and more—illuminating the full scope of our region’s capabilities. This map will be more than a snapshot; it will be a catalyst—guiding investment, driving strategic decisions, and unlocking opportunities for growth on an unprecedented scale." • "As we usher in 2025, I’m filled with a profound sense of gratitude and optimism for what lies ahead. Thanks to your continued passion, collaboration, and innovation, BioscienceLA is poised to make this year our most impactful yet." If you haven't already, please check out last week's newsletter for our CEO's (Stephanie Hsieh) reflections on 2024 and outlook on 2025. https://lnkd.in/dk6g5iqS We are also continuing to monitor the wildfires in our beloved Los Angeles region and thinking about the families and homes who are impacted. • 📰 Check out this Los Angeles Business Journal feature of BioscienceLA & our CEO, Stephanie Hsieh. https://lnkd.in/gEmQefxr “L.A. is now a hodge-podge of bioscience mini-clusters,” Hsieh said, referring to the generally small clusters of companies in Pasadena, along the 101 Corridor in western Los Angeles and eastern Ventura counties, Westwood/Santa Monica and the South Bay. “We need a new story line to put the image out there of Los Angeles County as a single bioscience mega cluster. And you do that by tying everything into one destination, including the supporting ecosystem.” Check out the full article to read more.
