Botulism is caused by Botulinum Neurotoxin, commonly known as botulinum toxin, a powerful substance derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large doses, botulinum toxin can cause muscle paralysis and respiratory failure, which can be fatal if not treated promptly. Despite its potential dangers, botulinum toxin has a wide range of medical and cosmetic applications when used in controlled, small doses. In therapeutics, it is valued for its ability to temporarily paralyze muscles, allowing for the treatment of various conditions.
