In the first six months of 2024, private market dry powder fell cumulatively to $3.49T, down from $3.80T at the end of 2023, as capital deployment outpaces new fund formation. New Venture Capital fund formation is down 9.2%, Private Equity is down 8.2%, and Private Debt is down 6.7%. What this trend means is this: investors are deploying capital cautiously. The macroeconomic environment is uncertain, and liquidity is tight. The trend also indicates we may see a recalibration of valuations and deal-making strategies as firms adapt to changing market dynamics. Without a doubt, we are in a careful, selective funding environment. For startups – particularly those seeking first institutional capital – it's more important than ever to have a solid business model, a clear and provable path to profitability, and a knowledge of what kind of capital partner will serve your needs best over time. #PrivateMarkets #VentureCapital #PrivateEquity #Fundraising #Investing #DryPowder #AlternativeInvestments #Prequin

In a special Extraordinary Pursuits Podcast interview, BIP Capital CEO Mark Buffington explains how the traditional Power Law of Venture Capital works and why it is not the best measure of success for funds, founders, and investors. Some element of the Power Law is inherent in every VC deal. Mark argues that the current approach taken by many large, established funds is too extreme. Instead of measuring success as having ~10% of investments generate a 25x and leaving everything else essentially written off, Mark makes a case for using a 'batting average' approach to emphasize consistent high performance. This is an episode for founders and investors who want a close-up, experienced look at how VC works – and how it can work best for them. 🎧 Watch or listen now. https://lnkd.in/eihtvA9F #VentureCapital #StartupSuccess #InvestmentStrategies #Founders #Investors #ExtraordinaryPursuits #BIPVentures #Funding #PowerLaw
