Safety First: The Foundation of a Great Pilot

Financial Savvy: Adding Value Beyond the Cockpit

Owners appreciate a pilot who actively looks for ways to save on operational costs. Researching fuel stops, negotiating landing fees, and exploring membership programs are all ways you can show your dedication to their financial well-being.

These efforts not only cut down on expenses but also position you as a trusted steward of their aircraft and investment.

The Power of Patience: Finding the Right Fit

Just as owners should be selective about the crew they hire, you should be selective about the roles you take. Find positions where you can align with the values of the aircraft owner and demonstrate your commitment to both safety and cost efficiency.

Building a reputation as a pilot who goes above and beyond will open doors to more opportunities.

Mutual Benefits: Creating a Win-Win Relationship

By helping an aircraft owner save money, you position yourself as a key player in their operation. When owners see the value you bring, they are more likely to reward your efforts with bonuses, incentives, and long-term job security.

Cultivating this win-win relationship ensures a mutually beneficial partnership that supports your career growth.

FAQ | How do I become a contract pilot? ✈️🧑✈️ To become a Contract Pilot, you must be 12-month current in the aircraft your employer wants you to fly. Most Contract Pilots work for three or more companies, so building a network of employers is key. We know successful Contract Pilots who offer one company a discount on their rate to be their sponsor for recurrent training. For example, the Contract Pilot will offer their sponsoring company a $1,000/day rate instead of their usual $1,500/day in exchange for recurrent sponsorship. The flexibility Contract Pilots offer is especially popular during pilot shortages. Contract pilots are most often used for Part-91 operations. But management companies, smaller operators, and Part-135 operators seeing fast growth are also using contract pilots more often than ever. —Pros— With the right aircraft, Contract Pilots can make as much as $50K per month. If you enjoy talking to people, working as a Contract Pilot offers constant opportunities to network. You’ll always have new and exciting destinations to travel to and people to meet. This is an opportunity to be your own boss. —Cons— As a Contract Pilot, you’ll face times of feast or famine. It can be hard to plan, and you’ll sometimes be overbooked if you fear turning down a job. You may sometimes have to pay for your own recurrent training. Airlining around the world and constant networking can become tiring for some. Since you’re now self-employed, you also must figure out your own health insurance, retirement benefits, and tax planning and set yourself up as an LLC. These hurdles are worth it for many who love the benefits of working as a Contract Pilot. It’s an ideal situation for many retired corporate and airline pilots who already have experience in type and retirement plans in place. Anyone with an interest in aircraft management and ferry operations will do great as a Contract Pilot. #AviationJobs #AviationCareers #ContractPilot
