Straight Forward Energy

About us

Straight Forward Energy For Texas With so many energy providers charging unfair prices, offering complicated plans, and burying loopholes in the fine print, you might feel like you’re not in control. But you’re not as powerless as you think. The choice is yours. At BKV, we put fairness, transparency, simplicity and (most importantly) you, first. We currently serve customers in the ERCOT market, including Houston, Dallas, Fort-Worth, Plano, Tyler, Waco metro areas. BKV was created when a group of innovators realized they had a better way to produce energy and empower Texans. BKV invested millions of dollars and thousands of hours to put energy back into the grid through cleaner-burning natural gas and renewables from winterized power plants. For more than five years, BKV has been making reliable, sustainable energy used by millions of homes. Now, as a provider and producer, BKV wants to put that power directly in the hands of the people. We want to build on our foundation of using energy as a source for good and make the Texas energy industry better than when we found it. If it was easy to cut down on carbon emissions and make cleaner energy with the same reliability our communities depend on, someone would have done it already. We are not here to do what is easy. We are here to do what is right.

    Vice President - Retail Power

Texas experienced a series of destructive weather events that severely affected the Dallas Fort-Worth and Houston areas, leaving almost two million people without power. So, did wholesale prices spike during these storms? Interestingly, the answer is “no.” Why did prices soar during winter storms Uri and Elliott in previous years, then? What makes these events so different? As with most things involving the grid, this is a complex topic. I’ll make some generalizing assumptions, but I hope to explain how different weather events can have radically opposing effects on wholesale electricity prices. If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll recall that ERCOT’s market rules are based on scarcity. When demand for electricity exceeds the available supply, prices rise rapidly. During a winter storm, demand skyrockets as temperatures drop and everyone needs to heat their homes. This sudden surge requires much more generation, sometimes exceeding available capacity, driving prices to the maximum allowed, where they can stay for an extended period. The recent May events were different. The issue wasn’t a sudden spike in demand but rather an inability for generators to deliver power to customers. High winds essentially shut down the infrastructure between supply and demand. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people lost power. From the grid’s perspective, that demand vanished. Simultaneously, generators couldn’t deliver electricity to these homes, resulting in an excess of generation capacity. ERCOT found itself in a situation with too much supply. It’s ironic because people without power desperately needed electricity and were willing to pay more for it (the cost of running a generator is much higher than typical electricity costs). Kudos to the utility companies and the crews that worked non-stop to restore power to most homes. So, there you have it. In simple terms, a winter storm is a demand-increasing event that causes prices to spike, while severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, or hurricanes are distribution-disrupting events that cause prices to fall. Electricity is so ubiquitous that we don’t think about it until it’s gone. Then we realize how modern-day civilization cannot exist without it. #ERCOT #ElectricityPrices #MarketDynamics #Texas #Storms #Weather
