California Native American Day, celebrated annually on the fourth Friday of September, is a day dedicated to honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of Native American peoples in California. Black Oak Casino Resort is honored to celebrate along with their fellow tribes around the Golden State. Originally established as “Indian Day” in 1939, then-Governor Ronald Reagan created the first California Native American Day in 1968 after working closely with the state’s tribal leaders. This day of commemoration originally focused on acknowledging the Native American presence in California’s past but has grown into a more comprehensive celebration of Native American cultures and an opportunity to educate the public about their ongoing significance in the state’s cultural fabric. “We are so incredibly proud of not only our tribe’s longstanding history as one of the original unratified treaties of California but also of our fellow tribes throughout this great state for their massive and innumerable contributions over the years,” said Ty Day Jr, President of the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Board of Directors. In addition to numerous members of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, Black Oak proudly employs members of several other California Native American tribes and out of state Native American Tribes, including the Wilton Rancheria, Cherokee, Chickasaw Nation, Alaskan Athabaskan, Sioux, Ponca, Choctaw, Lakota, California Valley Miwok, Mono, Maidu and Patwin. The history of California Native American Day reflects the efforts of both Native and non-Native communities to recognize and preserve the heritage of the state’s Indigenous peoples. While the holiday initially started as an educational tool in schools, it has expanded into a broader celebration involving ceremonies, cultural events, and discussions about Native American history and contemporary issues. The day is now recognized as a time to honor the diversity of Native American tribes, many of which have lived in California for thousands of years.
