Today, Visit Mississippi and the Mississippi Humanities Council proudly unveiled a new Mississippi Freedom Trail marker honoring the courageous efforts of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. This is the first Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker outside of the state, located at the Kennedy Plaza in front of Historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In August 1964, MFDP delegates argued that the all-White regular state party violated the bylaws of the national party by excluding Black Mississippians. The challenge included Fannie Lou Hamer's riveting testimony before the credentials committee. Although the MFDP was not seated, their effort led to the creation of Mississippi's first integrated delegation in 1968. Join us in commemorating this pivotal moment in history and honoring the legacy of the MFDP and their enduring impact on civil rights. A special thank you to Visit Atlantic City and the New Jersey Division of Travel & Tourism for their invaluable partnership and essential support in bringing this tribute to life. Being a tourist in my own hometown had me enjoying the James Brown Family Foundation Tour. A highlight was a stop at the famous statue of the legendary entertainer known as the GODFATHER OF SOUL and the HARDEST WORKING MAN IN SHOW BUSINESS. There are so many touchpoints along this interesting journey, from the elementary school he attended, to the former Church’s Chicken where he had the preference of “only wings”, to the site of his former radio station, and even the funeral home that managed his three funeral services in December of 2006. (Note: the funeral home occupies a building that used to be a super popular night club owned by James Brown.) A priceless recent addition is an inside tour of the Augusta house Mr. Brown bought for his father - paid cash- in the late 1960’s. It’s history…frozen in time. Thanks to tour guide Kiki Cofer. The tour also includes admission to the Augusta Museum Of History which has an amazing James Brown exhibit. The museum also shares so many other interesting stories about Augusta. #destinationaugusta #comeseeaugusta #loveaugusta

We're Walking Towards a Brighter Future Come join us on August 24th for the UNCF-Birmingham's Walk for Education. Billy Reid has been an avid supporter of the UNCF's mission, and is eager to support during the annual walk to raise money for college scholarships. Lace up your shoes and meet us at Railroad Park to register at 7:00 am. On August 22nd from 3:00 – 6:00 pm, we're having our friends by the shop for some refreshments and to unveil the limited edition tees we've made for the event. The shirts are $80, with 100% of proceeds supporting UNCF on this 80th anniversary of the organization. This isn't your typical local fun-run shirt either. We're putting all our custom craftsmanship into these shirts -- drawing inspiration from Historically Black Colleges and Universities' rich tradition of marching bands and the drum majors that lead them. Powerful day as Visit Atlantic City, the NJ Division of Travel & Tourism and Visit Mississippi unveiled the newest addition to the Mississippi Freedom Trail outside of the historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. This marker, part of a series commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Freedom Summer voting rights movement, honors the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and its groundbreaking efforts toward equality at the 1964 Democratic National Convention which took place at Boardwalk Hall. Our fantastic Lt. Governor Tahesha Way joined Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves at the event, while Visit Atlantic City’s leader Larry Sieg did a great job as emcee. #publicrelationsagency, #tourism, #NewJersey, #AtlanticCity

I love when worlds collide. Last night, towards the end of Missy Elliott’s hometown show at the Hampton Coliseum, a trio of elected officials came out on stage. Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck, Speaker of the House Don Scott and Congressman Bobby Scott all presented Missy with declarations, certificates and recognition for her successes not just as an artist, but for her community involvement. It was such a great moment and made me so happy. #virginiaisformusiclovers
