Today, Visit Mississippi and the Mississippi Humanities Council proudly unveiled a new Mississippi Freedom Trail marker honoring the courageous efforts of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. This is the first Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker outside of the state, located at the Kennedy Plaza in front of Historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In August 1964, MFDP delegates argued that the all-White regular state party violated the bylaws of the national party by excluding Black Mississippians. The challenge included Fannie Lou Hamer's riveting testimony before the credentials committee. Although the MFDP was not seated, their effort led to the creation of Mississippi's first integrated delegation in 1968. Join us in commemorating this pivotal moment in history and honoring the legacy of the MFDP and their enduring impact on civil rights. A special thank you to Visit Atlantic City and the New Jersey Division of Travel & Tourism for their invaluable partnership and essential support in bringing this tribute to life.
