Our thoughts are with the communities affected by Hurricane Helene. The strength of this hurricane has brought catastrophic damage across several states, highlighting the urgent realities of climate change and its effects on people, our oceans and coastal ecosystems. We encourage everyone to stay informed, support equitable recovery efforts, and advocate for sustainable practices to protect our oceans and shores. Together, we can make a difference. 🌊🐠 Did you know the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has received nearly 500 reports of unusual fish behavior affecting over various fish species, including the endangered smalltooth sawfish! These fish have been seen swimming in circles at the surface and losing their ability to stay upright under bright lights at night. 🐟💔 Preliminary water samples from affected areas revealed high concentrations of benthic harmful algae. In response, NOAA's NCCOS has awarded $25,000 to Florida Gulf Coast University, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, and the University of South Alabama to investigate these alarming conditions. Researchers are working closely with partners to collect samples and identify harmful algae in the region. 🧪🔍 This collaborative effort aims to determine the extent of the harmful algae and its potential links to the unusual fish behavior. #FloridaKeys #MarineConservation #BlackinMarineScience #OceanScience #MarineScience #HarmfulAlgaalBlooms #MarineScienceforthaStreetz
