Preservation. Education. Conversations.
About us
The African American Museum of Iowa is the only museum in the state dedicated exclusively to preserving Iowa’s African American history. It is the place where conversations start around issues of community, race, and social justice for those who seek to expand their knowledge and share their interests. As a statewide organization, we envision building communities that come together to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of Iowa’s African American history and culture through conversation, engagement, and reflection. In today’s world, it is essential to ensure that every voice is heard and understood. We want to make sure that people in communities across the state have the opportunity to hear the stories of Iowa’s black history, not only for a better understanding of Iowa’s past, but to ensure our state’s future success. You can help share those stories by joining in our mission to preserve, educate, and teach Iowa’s black history. Come be a part of the most forward-thinking museum in Iowa.

The results are in! Thank you to everyone who voted in our exhibit topic survey! The AAMI's 2025 exhibit topic will be.... Black Agriculture in Iowa! Black farmers have a long history in Iowa. Some came as freed men while others were fugitives from enslavement. This exhibit will trace the history of Black farming in Iowa from the mid-19th century to today. It will look at the diverse impact Black farmers have in rural Iowa and the farming industry. From the avenues of science, politics, civil rights, and education, they continue working for progress in both the farming industry and their place in it. Revisit AAMI programming about Black Agriculture with this presentation by Dr. Negus Rudison-Imhotep at the Central Library in Des Moines here: https://lnkd.in/gdYRGsgJ
