Today, May 23, 2024, Sena Loyd, Blockchains' Director of Policy, delivered a public comment to the Nevada Joint Interim Standing Committee on Commerce and Labor in pursuit of future collaboration and education on comprehensive legislation to support privacy-enhancing technologies. 🌐 “The intersection of emerging technology and artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping our digital landscape," said Dr. Zee Hamza, PhD, Blockchains' Head of AI/ML. "Today's educational session, hosted by Senator Dr. Pat Spearman, (D-Nevada), highlighted the crucial role of regulation, privacy, and innovation in this transformation." Here are five key takeaways:

This week in Washington DC, the Blockchains team (Matthew Digesti, Peter B., and Sena Loyd) participated in the DC #Blockchain Summit hosted by The Digital Chamber, where we engaged with policymakers to promote responsible regulation while advocating for legislation recognizing privacy as a fundamental consumer right. You can read our key takeaways from the event and why these issues matter on our blog, but here's what YOU can do to ensure the security of our economic and digital future.    ✅ Find Your Legislator: Visit USA.gov to find your local legislator’s contact information.   ✅ Write a Letter or Email: State your position on the issue. You can take inspiration from our blog, but personalizing why these issues matter to you can make your message more impactful.     ✅ Make a Phone Call: A quick phone call can be just as effective. Introduce yourself, let them know you are a constituent, and explain why the issue matters to you and how you want them to vote as your representative.   ✅ Share with Friends and Family: Encourage friends and family to join you in contacting their legislators about these critical Web3 issues, by sharing our post by email or on social media. #DCBlockchain https://lnkd.in/gPsqZadf

Do you own your #identity?  TL;DR: No. Think about all the account identifiers and digital breadcrumbs that follow you as you live your life online: All this data is created, controlled and stored by others – for their gain, not yours. It’s not data you control. Each of us is a walking, talking identifier linked to a mass of data that others own. Our identities are commodified, traded and exploited. Everything we create and consume online is fodder for data-hungry corporations’ profit-seeking business plans and algorithms. And in the #AI era, it’s worse: Businesses have become insatiable hoarders of any and all personal data, which they use in an arms race to best their competitors. This data is used by businesses to extract value from individuals  more efficiently, through better personal targeting of messages, offers and products. If you’re like most people, you’re unaware of how your data is being used, and it’s not your fault. It’s by design. The businesses collecting this data don’t have any incentive to be transparent with how they collect and exploit your digital identity. It's not like you can just quit, either. The use of many of these systems is often critical for individual social and financial success. It’s a new and odd form of indentured servitude -- to the corporations that have created the terms for these platforms, where you can never pay off the debt and never leave. Just ask users of Facebook, X and more who come back day after day, even with the knowledge of exploitation. All this data about us: it’s not ours. We never see it. And it is a real asset that companies further monetize by buying, selling, and trading with other businesses. It’s time we take this data back. #web3id Read our latest post to learn how. https://lnkd.in/gEFGAKrR

The signing of California's Delete Act by Governor Gavin Newsom is undeniably a significant step forward in bolstering consumer privacy and reining in data broker practices. This pioneering legislation allows consumers to request the mass deletion of their personal information from data brokers, shedding light on the opaque world of data trading. However, a caveat remains—this law still predominantly places the onus on the individual, potentially imposing significant burdens on consumers who must actively demand their data's removal. While celebrated by privacy advocates, the Delete Act may inadvertently complicate the operations of legitimate data brokers and pressure other businesses to reconsider their data practices. It is an important move in the right direction, yet further refinements are essential to ensure a more balanced approach to data privacy and protection.   Click here to see how blockchain technology is changing the challenges of data privacy. https://lnkd.in/gSdbEWBq

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) revolutionize the customer-business dynamic, empowering businesses to gather insights into consumer behavior while also respecting individual privacy. By replacing personally identifiable information with DIDs, businesses can analyze patterns and trends without compromising user identities, thus striking a balance between privacy, security, and data-driven insight. #Web3 #CustomerPrivacy
