The Blue Planet Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 2020 by leading climate change advocate Henk Rogers,

About us

The non-profit builds upon monumental climate change policies and initiatives of his Hawaii-based Blue Planet Foundation. Established in 2008, the Foundation successfully passed the nation’s first 100% renewable energy law, requiring the State of Hawaii to commit to 100% clean energy by 2045. It also designed and implemented successful business models to guide Hawaii’s utility in transitioning to 100% renewable energy and continues to drive key policies shaping the State’s clean energy future. Having inspired other states and regions to take similar actions, Blue Planet Alliance was established to expand the Foundation’s efforts beyond Hawaii. Its mission is to regenerate the environment and become 100% sustainable by 2045. Through a “mandate first” approach to initiating global climate change action, the Alliance aims to create measurable and scalable initiatives and results among individuals, organizations, cities, states, countries and eventually, the world

Belize is not an island — it's a Central American country. But it has so many qualities of an island — geographically and culturally — that the UN considers it a Small Island Developing State. Belize is one of 10 island (or island-like) nations that participated in our third Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program, which took place in Hawaii in October, and brought the total of island countries that have matriculated through our Program to 28. We project that 70 countries and territories will come through our program by the end of 2026, which will be an incredibly powerful diplomatic bloc that can pressure the globe's largest polluters to ditch dirty energy, and end climate change. 🏝️ The GTI Observatory Summit 2024 brought two days of lively discussions, collaborative workshops, and big ideas to the sunny shores of Curaçao in the Caribbean.   The event brought together the GTI Observatory's leading Committees, global experts and technical specialists, alongside key island stakeholders.   The main goal of this meeting was to chart a course for islands’ energy security, resilience, sustainable development and revitalized economies through accelerated energy transition.   Case studies from the 100% RES Islands Initiative demonstrate that transitioning to fully renewable energy systems is technically and economically viable and brings significant investment opportunities, even for small islands.   🔵 DAY 1: Scaling up 100% RES Islands   With the cooperation of an exceptional group of experts and diverse stakeholders, we outlined a framework to bring together the forces of various actors active in the world and accelerate transformative actions on small islands while originating replicable use cases. Laying Islands’ journey to becoming renewable energy superpowers   The estimated renewable capacity potential on islands worldwide is 1 TW, equivalent to about USD 1 trillion of investment opportunity. These resources can be drawn from fossil fuel subsidies which amount to a staggering USD 7 trillion globally.   🔵 DAY 2: Financing and implementation for Curacao’s 100% renewables The Summit featured a pioneering workshop with development finance institutions, international investors, industry leaders, and key island stakeholders, focused on increasing financial inflows for efficient implementation and unlocking significant investment potential.   We presented the scenarios developed in detail and collected feedback and input from all the stakeholders gathered on the island with the objective to unlock USD 500+ million investment potential and help the island achieve energy security and resilience with 100% renewable power by 2035.   We also visited the wind parks on Curacao’s Eastern coast. It was great to see two wind farms in operation with a total capacity of 46MW, and a new 20MW one that is currently being connected to the electricity grid.   Largely maintained by local staff, active wind turbines are 80m high and develop 3MW each, enough to power more than 800 households. The new ones are 100m tall with power above 4MW each!   Building on the summit’s outcomes, we now look forward to engaging #COP29 to ensure islands’ unique challenges and priorities are heard loud and clear.   👏 We would like to thank the Ministry of Economic Development of CuraçaoCINEX - Curaçao Investment & Export Promotion Agency, our esteemed speakers and guests. Special thanks to Vanessa ToréMarit Brommer, Sai NavotiJoseph BorgRosemary O'HehirLance Gould and Jeanette M. Bonet as this event would not have been possible without their cooperation. ▶️ Learn more: https://shorturl.at/xeiZ2

CONGRATULATIONS!! Leading NZ tech and data company Generate Zero is the first in #NZ to become a member of the Blue Planet Alliance. Honored to serve on the boards of both these gamechanging organizations. BPA Founder Henk Rogers and Generate Zero CEO Carmen Vicelich celebrated the event and officiated the signing ceremony in Auckland witnessed by some of NZ’s top business and media leaders including Xero founder Rod Drury, 2degrees CEO Mark Callander, Kiwibank CEO Steve Jurkovich and board member Anna Curzon, TVNZ CEO Jodi O'Donnell, TSB Bank CEO Kerry Boielle, The Villars Institute co-founder Suzan Craig, Tower Insurance CEO Blair Turnbull, Campbell Mitchell CEO Fidelity Life. Great to have so many Global Women NZ members present 😊 Carmen’s license plate says it all… As NZ was first in the world to mandate reporting on scope 3 emissions (supply chain and customer base) @Generate Zero is helping not only to quantify these but also providing a framework for decarbonisation. Hurricane Helene underscores the critical need for more solar-battery microgrids, as highlighted in this insightful article by Canary Media. The devastating impacts of such storms remind us of the vulnerability island communities face—and why the transition to renewable energy is not just a goal but a necessity. 🌍⚡ This discussion couldn't come at a better time, as just a week ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship in Hawaii, where I had the opportunity to learn more about all the renewable energy efforts and options available to us! ❤️🌺 #RenewableEnergy #SolarBatteryMicrogrids #ClimateAction #Curacao #BPA2024 #ClimateJustice 🇨🇼🙌🏽 @blueplanetallianceorg @east.west.center @uog_tritons @guamgreengrowth @arizonastateuniversity @manapacific.inc @caribbeanaccelerator @ccreee_gnsec @brooklynstorylab

#Massive opportunity for NZ to become a global producer of low cost renewables - Rod Drury founder of Xero. Honored to speak with Rod and founder of Tetris and Blue Planet Alliance Henk Rogers on a stellar panel of #Kiwi #business #leaders urging more attention to combating the causes of the climate crisis and a faster global transition to #renewable #energy. Thanks co-hosts Generate Zero CEO Carmen Vicelich - whose innovative software is helping companies track Scope 3 emissions and turbo charge their decarbonisation journeys - and Tower Insurance CEO Blair Turnbull. The crisis - and the cause In the wake of the huge recent hurricane damage in the US Blair reminded everyone of the increasingly frequent and more intense Category 5 storms in the #Pacific as the climate crisis intensifies, and the heartbreaking damage they do. Tower is coming up with innovative solutions like parametric insurance with payouts within 24 hours. Financing the race to renewables is another key component - Electric vehicles (#EVs) can be used to recharge the grid after storms for example, providing a great disaster risk response strategy as well as improved energy security through locally generated power rather than expensive imported fossil fuels. Leading by example We were joined by Xero founder Rod Drury, now leading the charge to 100pc renewables in Queenstown Lakes District, and Kiwibank CEO Steve Jurkovich leading NZ’s only large bank to eschew fossil fuel investments and the first to B-Corps status (yes! Changing our bank to Kiwibank! Go Steve!) Henk referenced Hawaii’s 2015 commitment to 100pc renewable energy by 2045- the first state in the U.S. to do so - and the demonstration effect that had in other states as California and others followed Hawaii’s lead. Now over 50pc of all Americans are covered by a 100pc renewable energy mandate. “Set a target and go for it!” Huge opportunities Rod underscored the massive opportunity for NZ to be a global supplier of low cost renewable energy in the same way as Iceland given our hydro, wind and geothermal assets.  Given the growing demand for generative AI and the issues that other countries have faced meeting AI energy demands this is critical. “With the right policy frameworks the private sector can prove the commercial case for low carbon projects it can help shift both mindsets and policy.” Couldn’t agree more Rod! (Of course I raised my pet peeve of the $7Trillion p/a in perverse fossil fuel #subsidies the International Monetary Fund and The World Bank point out are significantly slowing the transition.) What an incredible inspiration to share the stage with such principled and innovative business leaders! As Carmen put it so beautifully in closing, “I have 4 kids and I want to be able to look them in the eye and say I did everything in my power both personally and professionally to prevent the carnage of the climate crisis”.
