One of the ways I'm supporting refugees here in Odessa, Ukraine is buying new equipment for people with special needs. This is Katya, a woman with cerebral palsy who spends her free time assisting children with special needs as well. Her crutches were in bad shape so we got her a new pair. More materials were purchased today and good progress is being made on The House of Mercy, an elderly home for refugees here in Odessa, Ukraine. 7 rooms were damaged due to a plumbing issue forcing some of the residents into a shelter with poor living conditions. We hope to get those people back in their comfortable home next week. Greetings from Odessa, Ukraine I have been on site since January 4 working on several projects to help those in need during some very difficult times through my 501(c)3 non profit organization https://lnkd.in/eEFwFWHw which I started after my first volunteer trip here shortly after the start of the war in 2022. Some of the projects I am currently working on include: Feeding 400 refugees per month on a rotating basis through a church program that no longer has funds to provide. $2700 feeds 200 people for 6-8 weeks which comes out to just $13.50 per refugee. Providing food and supplies for widows and children. Many families have lost their husbands to the war and I already took part in assisting 53 of these families. We are buying them $25 worth of groceries, which doesn't sound like much, but over here the dollar goes much further so this is a huge help. Food for the people of Kherson, a city on the front line of the war and many are going without food for days. I have connected with my friends from Denmark who run their own org and are supplied with free meat. I have supplied this group with other foods and items to add to the bags at a cost of just $6 each. To date we have delivered 240 bags of food to Kherson. The House of Mercy is an elderly home here in Odessa giving older refugees a comfortable place to stay. I found the home had suffered a plumbing leak and 7 rooms have been rendered unlivable. The estimate for repairs is just $1400 and this project is now underway after materials were purchased earlier this week. Soon, the 7 tenants who had to move into a very uncomfortable shelter will return home. I have also pledged to pay two months of electricity for this place at $210 per month and the group from Denmark supply some food. Medical/Dental needs. We are currently looking into providing some badly needed dental work for refugees. We have also recently purchased a new set of crutches for a woman and look to do more for the special needs. I have personally met with several students in the city who are trying to get through college. My friends at www.uacukraine.org/ have a great sponsorship program for these kids and for $50/month you can help them make a better life for themselves. There are some widows in the program as well. BTI has pledged $100 for one month to cover two students until March in the hope they can find permanent sponsors. The above projects are all ongoing but I am also trying my best to get funds to put a roof on an orphanage that houses 11 children. It is located in the city of Artsyz which is 2 hours east of Odessa. I have been there and have seen the condition of the roof and the damage it is causing to the rest of the home, including the bedrooms of the kids.
