Currently, we are seeing an increase in technologies like mobile apps and social networks, which can negatively affect school-aged children’s mental health. Excessive use often leads to social isolation, anxiety, and a lack of real social interactions. To address these challenges, our project uses innovative tools suited to the digital nature of today’s youth. This includes "robots for good," like the Buddy robot, which fosters healthy social relationships by keeping children engaged with real-world social norms. Additionally, a specially trained therapy dog helps balance digital engagement with comforting, real-world connections. We have introduced BUDDY The Emotional Robot 🤖, into Slovak schools to test how thoughtfully integrated technology can improve education, mental health, and social skills. With Buddy and Ajo the therapy dog, we support our partner school, ZŠ Krásna Lúka in eastern Slovakia, in using appropriate technologies to enhance children’s development and well-being. 👋 Rather than banning technology, we use children’s interest in digital tools to promote healthy development. Our goal is to help schools in eastern Slovakia adapt to modern needs, proving that effective technology use can benefit both education and mental health. 📍 Our activities benefits from the Via Pribina Foundation 🤝, which funded Buddy's purchase and implementation. The Via Pribina Foundation is backed by companies associated with significant infrastructural developments like the R1 Via Pribina expressway and the northern bypass of Banská Bystrica. Buddy plays a key role in our interventions, enhancing our educational, social, and healthcare programs. Buddy has engaged with socially disadvantaged children in Prešov, is loaned to high school students in Košice to foster interest in science and technology among girls and boys, and will continue to visit our autistics childrens 💙, and ours seniors, demonstrating its versatile, community-centered applications. What if we could use robots to support children with Autism? I got inspired to create this illustration by "Buddy" the emotional Robot created by BLUE FROG ROBOTICS 🤖 in France. This startup founded by Rodolphe Hasselvander designs "Robots for Good". Buddy is a Robot that has already been adopted by many institutions to support education and development of children with autism. These children tend to trust Robots because they are more predictable than people, but at the same time more engaging than a tablet or a computer. Buddy is "a character", and reacts to touch and voice. He can propose any type of games. Developers can create applications for Buddy since it uses Android operating system. Buddy is also been used as a companion and assistant for senior people that live alone, and as a hospitality tool. Buddy can welcome you at the reception of a hotel and it will "feel" better than just going to a touch screen. With people in many countries getting older, and having less children, Robots in the future will be a very useful tool for assistance of those with special requirements and capabilities. And Rodolphe is already helping to create a future where this Robots can provide easy assistance and connection. How do you get buy in for your ideas? As a child, Rodolphe wanted to be become an archeologist or a robot creator. After supporting the prime minister of France by studying the development of technology for the support of senior citizens, he got an opportunity to show a drawing of what a friendly assistant robot could look like. Suite à des ajustements apportés à mon prompt de l’IA, Buddy est devenu plus concis et ajoute désormais une pointe d’humour à nos échanges. Dans cette vidéo, nous vivons un moment d’émotion à travers un échange poétique teinté de légèreté.
