Bluesky was never meant to be an app — or even a company. It began as an open source research project at Twitter, a skunkworks team helmed by open internet evangelist Jay Graber. Graber’s mandate was to build a protocol, a shared language that computers could use to talk to each other, designed specifically for social media. Through the AT Protocol (or Authentic Transfer, as well as, “where you at online?”), Twitter and other companies would be able to exchange information with one another, creating an open network where posts could be freely shared across social platforms. But after Elon Musk bought Twitter, it became clear that Bluesky was no longer on its roadmap. Twitter under Musk began to transform, facing an advertiser boycott, exodus of users, and eventually a name change to X. So the team that made the protocol spun up a quick app, just to show how it might be used. They launched it as an invite-only social network in 2023. Keep reading: https://trib.al/FlyfV5B

  • As other platforms abdicate a responsibility to keep users informed, we're thinking about how to prioritize rapid information distribution, especially in times of disaster response. Here's one example. Behind the scenes, Bluesky trending topics are actually all custom feeds. Just like any custom feed, you can pin a trending topic, like the LA Fires, to the homepage of your Bluesky app. Now, you can easily see updates right when you open Bluesky.

We aspire to be where our customers, partners, and even competitors gather, engaging with them in the places they call home. This philosophy has guided Microsoft’s presence across numerous social networks, each with its own unique sense of community. Our goal is to engage authentically, fostering genuine connections and meaningful conversations. Throughout our journey, we've actively participated in dialogues across nearly all social media platforms. From the fast-paced world of Twitter/X to the professional ecosystem of LinkedIn, the visually rich landscapes of Instagram, and the community-driven discussions on Reddit, we've embraced the diversity and richness of these digital spaces. Our commitment remains consistent: to engage with respect, authenticity, and a deep understanding of each platform's unique culture. Today, we extend this commitment to Bluesky. Bluesky's decentralized model resonates deeply with us. Microsoft has long championed the idea of giving users control over their digital experiences. With Bluesky, you’re not a passive observer; you’re an active participant in sculpting your digital world. This platform represents a new frontier in social engagement, and we are eager to contribute to its growth and vibrancy. We see Bluesky as more than just another social network; it fosters a cohesive, connected digital ecosystem that enhances user experiences and fosters innovation. It’s about breaking down silos and enabling a flow of information that benefits all. Additionally, Bluesky’s decentralized framework fosters a more inclusive digital environment, aligning perfectly with our values of inclusivity and empowerment. We look forward to sharing our insights, listening to \feedback, and being part of this dynamic community. Together, let's continue to innovate, collaborate, and shape the future of digital interaction. Thank you for welcoming us into your space. We can't wait to connect and grow together on Bluesky.

🎉It looks like we’re the first newspaper to use the Bluesky Social API to create a comments section on our website! A lot of publishers steer clear of comments because of all the moderation challenges, but what’s special about Bluesky (and the open network) is that we can utilize the platform’s built in moderation service. I first chatted with Emily Liu about this back in February, and I’m so proud of Ellery Jones and Justin Myers for working on making this a reality for us. I’m so excited to see how we use this going forward 🦋
