  • Competing cultural norms, the dynamic nature of verbal discussions, and the unwritten rules of classroom conversation keep learners from fully participating in academic discussions. Enable more inclusive academic discussions with video-based discussion tools, such as Flipgrid or Padlet (video post feature). 👩🏾💻 With video-based discussion, students submit their video to a digital platform, where they also respond to their peers via video, audio, or text. 👩🏾💻 These conversations are saved, providing you with a record of which students contribute their ideas to the discussion, how often, and in what format. This formative “data” informs you of who speaks and whose ideas are taken up. 👩🏾💻 If you notice any learners not fully participating -OR- whose ideas have yet to be considered by their peers, you can design discussion protocols or strategies that create more opportunities for equitable sharing and listening. It’s your turn: Interact with our Loravore® Learning Resource on video-based discussion: https://lnkd.in/gWhRPGq 💬 Tell us: What peer discussion protocols do you implement in your learning community to make academic discussion more inclusive? #InstructionalEquity #FormativeAssessment #ProfessionalLearning #Loravore #Bluknowledge

  • A strategic planning report that details goals & objectives and milestones & metrics is the prequel to the story of how your organization changes the communities you serve. For many, strategic planning conjures images of reports detailing goals & objectives and milestones & metrics. But before all that . . . there’s dialogue! Informed by stakeholder interviews and organizational and community research, we design interactive sessions that engage participants in respectful and responsive discussions that 🗨️ encourage community building and connections across roles. 🗨️ center on experiences with and expectations for their organization and community. 🗨️ create space for all voices, expressions, and storytelling to be heard. 🗨️ engage all roles in reflection and goal-setting related to programming, policy work, funding, marketing, and communications. • So, you scaffold your INSTRUCTION by adjusting reading levels, chunking content, or planning stepwise questions. But, do you scaffold your ASSESSMENTS? We know that our learners differ in the ways they build knowledge, process information, and engage in sensemaking. This means they will likely differ in the ways they make visible their successes and struggles while learning. In order to scaffold an assessment, you must adapt the format, delivery, and even content to your learners’ current knowledge, skills, or abilities. EXAMPLE: An assessment is intended to measure a learners’ ability to explain their thinking, and you have learners who struggle to process information. To scaffold your assessment, you can 🪜 Add steps that help learners organize and even visualize the key information. 🪜 Ask learners to use that organized information to respond to your questions. 🪜 Provide sentence or paragraph frames to structure their explanations. Don’t think about it as giving away the answer. You're meeting learners where they are to determine 📍 what they know 📍 what else they need to know 📍 how to support their learning progress. 👉🏾 Take the next step, interact and learn with our Loravore® Learning Resource, Build an Equitable Assessment Practice: https://lnkd.in/exiA65n 💬 Comment: How do you scaffolded assessments to meet the learning needs of your students? #InstructionalEquity #FormativeAssessments #Loravore #Bluknowledge #EquityinEducation #ProfessionalLearning

  • Looking to foster collective sensemaking and knowledge sharing in your learning community? Try “Collab-o-tation”! See examples and instructional benefits👇🏾 COLLAB-O-TATION pairs students and tasks them to collaboratively annotate assigned text using the editing tools in their shared digital whiteboard space. INSTRUCTIONAL BENEFITS: ❶ In pairs, students must negotiate ideas and reach a consensus as they build knowledge together. ❷ The questioning strategy requires students to explain and compare texts and annotations with each other. ❸ Students' digital annotations (aka learning artifacts) are available as resources for future learning. Press play to access our instructional redesign that transforms digital annotation into a collaborative learning experience: https://lnkd.in/eT_MQb3 💬 Comment: What instructional design or digital tools have you used to make annotation or other sensemaking activities more collaborative? #InstructionalEquity #DigitalLearning #edtech #Loravore #Bluknowledge

  • Which children's books promote diverse ways of knowing and doing STEM? 💬 This #FallReading conversation seeks to curate STEM-inspiring children’s books for learning at home, in schools, and across communities. Here’s a few criteria for educators and parents to consider when selecting STEM-inspired books for children: ① Stories that highlight characters or communities with diverse backgrounds, histories, and experiences. Referencing Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, the book becomes a mirror, window, or sliding door—children can see themselves in the characters as they become immersed in the story. ② Books that vividly illustrate the engaging practices of science and depict the evolving nature of science exploration: ask questions, develop hypotheses, conduct experiments. ③ Tales that celebrate the unique traits, perspectives, and pursuits of children and how their families and communities embrace and support their passions. We’re keen to hear about STEM-inspired children's books or other media that meet one or more of these criteria! 🌟 Psst! Check out our Loravore Learning read aloud playlist for more inspiring stories that champion STEM and diverse learning experiences! 📖✨ https://lnkd.in/ekpc-pap 📷 The Aneris Collective, LLC #STEMeducation #RepresentationMatters #EarlyLearning #DiverseBooks

Our next #RemixEQLive episode features Dr. Eva Marie Shivers, J.D., Ph.D., the Founding Executive Director of Indigo Cultural Center, a national non-profit organization focused on Healing Justice. Dr. Shivers will build our knowledge about early childhood research and interventions that disrupt the preschool to prison pipeline and afri-centric approaches to infant and early childhood mental health. During our conversation, we’ll discover how Dr. Shivers came to focus on early childhood development & education and explore questions of racial equity, liberation, and healing. And we’ll come to understand why she works so fiercely to make the world a more just place. Join the Remix EQ™ Live experience, where we drop knowledge and inspiration by asking questions, sharing examples, and connecting for change! Miss an episode? • Do you scaffold your assessments? We talk plenty about scaffolding text and tasks, but rarely consider the importance of scaffolding or adapting assessments to meet learners’ current knowledge, skills, and abilities.   We can agree that learners in our classrooms and schools differ in the ways they build knowledge, process information, and engage in sensemaking. This means they also differ in the way they make visible their successes and struggles while learning.   In response, we must vary the instructional supports needed to progress their learning AND adapt our assessments to meet learners’ needs.   For example: If your goal is to assess knowledge of a particular topic and you have learners who struggle to write. Consider asking learners to draw diagrams or record audio explanations to submit as evidence of their learning.   Press play to learn more about how to build your equitable assessment practice with our Loravore® Learning Playlist: Equitable Assessment: https://lnkd.in/ehSSbQTk    💬 Comment: What are 1-2 examples of how you have scaffolded or adapted assessments to meet your learners’ needs?
