Update on Mamás del Río: a transformative initiative for maternal and newborn health. Last year, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr Magaly Blas, a medical epidemiologist and programme director of Mamás del Río. This remarkable initiative is enhancing maternal and newborn health in remote Indigenous communities along the Amazon River, covering an impressive 1,000 kilometres in Peru and Colombia. Mamás del Río employs social innovations to empower community health workers by addressing healthcare delivery gaps. Through the use of mobile devices, these workers access essential information, ensuring better patient outcomes for the communities they serve. The BMJ Innovations special supplement on social innovations for health spotlighted Mamás del Río’s achievements, particularly in helping community health workers navigate communication challenges during the national lockdown. In their paper, Dr Blas and her team evaluated how technological interventions enabled communities to adapt to the new clinical landscape in a post-pandemic context. At the time, Mamás del Río was expanding into remote areas along the Peru-Colombia border, and the evidence from their research was being considered by the Peruvian Health Minister for policy changes to formalise the programme within the national health system. Dr Blas told me, “We found in BMJ a voice to report on what was happening to us during the pandemic to the international community. Having our research published in an important journal like BMJ Innovations demonstrates that our intervention is backed by research and highlights the impact we’re making in rural, remote, and Indigenous areas.” Since the publication of Building the Social Innovation for Health Ecosystem in Latin America - https://lnkd.in/eZBCgYyY - Mamás del Río has continued to expand. Impressive improvements have been made in essential newborn care outcomes, including thermal care, cord care, and breastfeeding, as well as an increase in hospital deliveries. The Peruvian Health Minister also initiated policy changes to integrate the programme into the national health system. Initially piloted in 13 communities in the Loreto District, Mamás del Río has now grown to encompass 84 communities along 350 kilometres of the Amazon. In 2023, further funding helped to expand services to 45 more communities, focusing on vaccination, anaemia prevention, addressing contraception, and work to prevent violence against women. Mamás del Río is a wonderful example of how innovative approaches can create lasting change. Read more >> https://lnkd.in/eDxfcTsm Other impact stories worth reading: https://lnkd.in/eMfBB4J7

In China, the burden of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, and diabetes has greatly increased in recent decades, driven mostly by population ageing and poor control of risk factors such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, and air pollution. Non-communicable diseases account for 91% of deaths in China and present an increasing burden on national healthcare expenditure. China urgently needs innovative and decisive strategies to tackle these chronic diseases. In this new BMJ Collection, experts from China shed light on the current state and challenges of non-communicable chronic disease prevention and control and discuss future strategies for tackling the problem. ➡ Read the collection in full: https://lnkd.in/eBRQF6bk
