📢 BOEM Launches POWERON: A Groundbreaking Partnership for Offshore Wind Energy! Today, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced the Partnership for an Offshore Wind Energy Regional Observation Network (POWERON). This innovative public-private partnership with offshore wind lessees aims to maximize the quality and consistency of scientific data collection while conserving resources. BOEM requires lessees to conduct long-term passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) to track sound levels and monitor the presence of vocalizing marine species like whales and dolphins. Through POWERON, lessees can now contribute annually to meet their PAM requirements via approved third parties. POWERON expands BOEM’s recently established Passive Acoustic Monitoring Network in the Atlantic Ocean, which the bureau launched with $5.8 million in Inflation Reduction Act funding to study the potential impacts of offshore wind operations on baleen whales. 🐳 🌍💼 Details: https://ow.ly/lhXj50TVGOb #OffshoreWind #POWERON #BOEM #UnleashingtheScience

When you think of the ocean... You might not think about bats. 🦇 But we do! These critical species can travel far out to sea, which is why we require automated tracking systems to monitor their movement and mitigate risks around offshore infrastructure. To support the coexistence of bats and offshore wind, we jointly fund projects with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). 🦇 On the East Coast - https://ow.ly/V3Nl50TUhyy - we fund assessments on the risk that offshore wind development poses to bats and how to prioritize wildlife monitoring needs. 🦇 On the West Coast - https://ow.ly/ujQB50TUhyx - we fund bat acoustic monitoring at fixed and mobile sites. These projects are just a few of our environmental studies that collect data and develop monitoring tools to protect wildlife. #BatWeek #UnleashingTheScience

BOEM uses the best available science to inform its decisions. Since its inception in 1973, our Environmental Studies Program (ESP) has provided over $1.25 billion for scientific research. The information gathered in these studies is then used to inform policy decisions on developing offshore energy and mineral resources. 🌊 On October 29, 2024, we're hitting a major milestone with the next offshore wind lease sale for Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. 🌊 BOEM knows the Gulf of Maine is special—home to Tribes, fishers, marine life, tourism, and Naval assets. That’s why we've worked closely with local communities and partners every step of the way. 🌊 We began with 13.7 million acres and, with your input, narrowed it down to 850,000 acres for auction, in an effort to avoid ocean use conflicts like fishing and navigation.
