Thank you Mariama White-Hammond for delivering your deeply meaningful commencement speech for BDEA's September graduation last night. You honored 14 young scholars with your words - as well as the partners, board members and guests who joined us in celebration. Your words reminded us of the power of a support team. We are grateful for ours in attendance: Boston Public Schools, Hope & Comfort, United Way of Massachusetts Bay Audax Group Emerson College.

It is HBCU Week and last night BDEA held the first of our four annual graduations. One of our graduates has already matriculated to Morgan State University - one of the four incredible institutions —Morgan State, Bowie State, Howard, and Coppin State— that our students visited during our April 2024 HBCU tour. The HBCU tour inspired new possibilities for our scholars, and we are proud of our students as they reach their post-secondary dreams. #HBCUWeek #HBCUPride #HBCULove #HistoricallyBlackColleges #FutureLeaders #BlackExcellence #CollegeTour #MorganState #BowieState #HowardUniversity #CoppinState #BlackScholars #HigherEducation #Graduation #Diploma

Welcome back to our Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) students! BDEA is a Horace Mann Boston public charter high school in Roxbury, MA. BDEA is part of the Boston Public School (BPS) system and was founded more than 25 years ago, initially as a night program, offering an alternative time for Boston youth to earn their high school degree. This model catered to older students who were already working and/or had been previously disengaged from their education. Knowing that flexibility, rigor, and agency were essential for these students, the school was established with one of the first competency-based academic models found anywhere in the country, and it remains the gold standard that we continue to share with other educators nationwide. Today, our unique model still serves students who have struggled in a traditional setting - and who are disproportionately represented in this city’s drop out rate - but who have instead found a home and academic success at BDEA. This article released on July 25th, looks at how surveillance technology is used in Boston. With thanks to Meena Kothandaraman, co-founder and experience strategist of twig+fish research practice, BDEA students took part in a month-long project in November 2023 learning about the concept of surveillance and it's connection to DNA, exploring many of the ethical topics touched upon in this article. The project culminated in students sharing their thoughts and findings with the Mayor's office - directly contributing to this critical discussion for the city. BDEA combines competency-based education with real world learning so that students may engage in helping to shape the future of their city. https://lnkd.in/eNTNggjs

We were deeply honored last week when five BDEA 2.0 young men completed the first ever Achieve Green program! This program has been almost three years in the making through the commitment and vision of Tremco's Rising Stars Program. Our students now begin their journeys in the Glazing profession on a pathway to long-term stable, gainful, critically-important employment. This was a collective effort led by David Hutchinson of Tremco Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing, and partners including Browning the Green Space and IUPAT District Council 35. These are OUR trailblazers! https://lnkd.in/e6fNuxyg #careersnotjobs #union #AchieveGreen #RisingStars #Greencareers
